425 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND STREET, Sydney Charles Sydney was born in Edmonton, Alberta on January 24, 1922. In June 1949, he enlisted with the Army and his service unit was 1st BN The Royal Rifles of Canada. Sydney served in Canada and Hong Kong during World War II. He was a Prisoner of War under the Japanese in Hong Kong. He was discharged on October 6, 1945. When Sydney returned to Canada, he was a Post-Master at Chesley Post Office until his retirement. Sydney passed away in 1997. STROUD, Frederick Leo “Fred” Fred was born in Dereham, Ontario on October 23, 1894. He was the son of Thomas Stroud and the eldest of the three sons that enlisted in early 1916. Fred enlisted on January 31, 1916 and served with Oxford’s Own 168th Battalion during World War I. Fred, however, was killed by shrapnel from an explosive shell during an attack on the village of Fresnoy during the 3rd Battle of Arras. Six other Tillsonburg soldiers also died in this failed attempt to break through the German lines and hold the village in early May 1917. STRONG, Carman Russel “Whitey” Whitey was born on April 28, 1918 in Tara, Ontario, to Thomas and Elizabeth Strong. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on May 21, 1942 during World War II and served with the Oxford Rifles in Vancouver, Prince George, and Nanaimo. Private Strong was discharged on February 1, 1946. He married Ruth Holmes in 1947 and they had no children. He worked at the Tara Creamery when he was a teenager, opening the gates for the milk trucks. When he came back from the war, he got his own truck route collecting milk. Whitey moved up after a while to Fieldman, helping farmers with their operations. The milk creamery was sold and became Gay Lea, where he worked until retirement. Whitey passed away on September 21, 2001 and he was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Tara. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 383 in Tara.
