419 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND STEELE, Michael Robert Michael was born in London, Ontario on March 20, 1947. He joined the Canadian Forces on June 15, 1963 as a signalman with 9 Signals Regiment. He was promoted to Sergeant and was employed as the Line Troop Sergeant. In 1970, he transferred to the 1st Hussars as Sgt and was promoted to Warrant Officer in 1974. In September 1975, he deployed as a Sgt, to Golan Heights for a six-month UN tour. In 1976, Michael was selected as the unit’s first recipient of the Armoured Corps Certificate of Merit and placed first on the Militia MWO course. In 1977, he was promoted to MWO. While serving as MWO with the 1st Hussars, he enrolled to the TQI Cougar Driver course and was promoted to CWO in 1983. He continued to upgrade his Cougar qualifications, in 1986 took the TQ2 Cougar Gunnery Course. In June 1987, he was appointed the District Chief Warrant Officer for London Militia District serving until September 1992, then commissioned to the rank of acting Captain. He has competed in the Canadian Forces Small Arms Competition, winning individual awards and the Grand Aggregate. In 1999, he was invested as a member of the Order of Military Merit. Michael deployed to Bosnia in 2005 serving seven months. He was discharged on June 14, 2007. Michael is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 145 for thirteen years. STEVENS, Harold Wellington Harold was born in Haysville, Ontario to James and Magdalene Stevens on October 20, 1922. He had four brothers, George, Albert, Lorne and Donald and one younger sister Kathleen. He worked as a shipper with Goodrich Tire and was a member of the United Rubber Workers of America Local 73. Harold enjoyed playing baseball, softball, hockey, wrestling and bowling. He played clarinet in the Waterloo Band. Harold enlisted with the Army on March 26, 1943 and was a Private with the Westminster Regiment (Motor) RCIC. He served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Italy. Private Stevens was killed in action on November 19, 1944 and is buried in the Villanova Canadian War Cemetery in Italy. He is gratefully remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo” and his picture hangs on the Memorial Wall in the City Hall in Waterloo, Ontario. STEPHENSON, Harry Blake Harry was born in Thedford, Ontario on June 22, 1922 to George and Lillie Stephenson. He married Francis McFarlane at age eighteen and they had one daughter, Judith. Harry did various jobs wherever work was available before he enlisted in the Army during World War II with The Lincoln and Welland Regiment in Chatham in 1941. Before going overseas, he was stationed in NewWestminster and Victoria, BC, and Citadel Hill in Halifax, NS. After going overseas, he was transferred to the Essex Scottish 48th Highlanders Regiment, 1st Infantry Brigade, and served in England and Italy. Private Harry Stephenson was killed in Italy on December 29, 1943 during the Battle of Ortona.
