415 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SPENCER, Philip Lawrence Philip was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario on August 10, 1935. He enlisted in the Army on September 9, 1954. He served with the RCR in Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Cyprus and Czechoslovakia. During his military career, Philip served as CO 1RCR from 1973 to 1975 including Cyprus from 1974 to 1975, Commander CFB London 1980 to 1983, Chief of Staff Canadian Forces Europe 1983 to 1986, Director General Army Doctrine and Operations 1986 to 1989 and was awarded the decorations of OMM, SBStJ and CD. He was discharged on March 1, 1990. In retirement from the Canadian Forces, Philip filled staff appointments in a variety of nonprofit organizations, as well as the volunteer Chair of the RCR Museum Board of Directors. He also taught part time at Fanshawe College in the areas of leadership and teambuilding. He is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 145 Vimy for 29 years. STAHLE, Robert E. Robert was born in Waterloo, Ontario to John H. and Hilda M. Stahle on February 21, 1921. He was part of a large family with three brothers and five sisters. As an adult, he worked at Globe Furniture as a planner. He enjoyed drawing as well as playing hockey, baseball and football. Robert enlisted on April 6, 1942, with the Scots Fusiliers of Canada. It was reported that Private Stahle was the victim of an accidental drowning at the Queenston Power House, on September 29, 1942. He is buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Kitchener, Ontario. He is gratefully remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo” and his picture hangs on the memorial Wall in the City Hall in Waterloo, Ontario. SPROULE, Ivan M. Ivan was born in Moose Creek, Ontario on October 22, 1910. He worked in the Munition Plant in Valleyfield, Quebec before enlisting with the Army on August 21, 1942. Ivan served during World War II with the Royal Canadian Artillery in Canada and was discharged in 1945. Ivan passed away August 4, 1991.
