411 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SMITH, Winston Leo Winston was born in Weymouth, Nova Scotia on February 12, 1940. He enlisted in the Army, Regular Force, on December 19, 1960 in Halifax. He completed basic training in Petawawa and 212 TelOp Training in Kingston. He was assigned to the Signal Corps and posted to Edmonton at CFB Penhold, which was Alberta’s main centre during the Cuban Crisis. Winston met his future bride while at CFB Penhold. He was then posted to London in 1965 and Ottawa in 1970. After being medically released in 1972, he started work at National Defence Headquarters in the special communications centre, where he received a commendation for cryptographic communication during the Falkand Island Crisis. Winston retired 1998 and resides in Merrickville, ON. He has been an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion Smiths Falls Branch 95 for forty-two years. SNIDER, William “Bill” William was born in Waterloo, Ontario on July 11, 1916, to Frederick and Marion (Doud). He had one sister, Marion Elizabeth. Along with working in his father’s Grist Mill, he also worked as a Coca Cola driver and salesman. William enlisted on July 23, 1941 with the Army. He had experience with driving trucks, so he joined the 4th Division Petrol Company of the Royal CanadianArmy Service Corps and served in Canada, United Kingdom and North West Europe during World War II. In the early evening hours of September 30, 1944, in Belgium, Private Snider was driving his motorcycle on a country road and crashed into the back of an unlit farmer’s wagon. People from nearby farms tried to assist Private Snider, unfortunately he passed away of his injuries. He is buried in Plot 111, Row C, Grave 6 in the Adegem Canadian War Cemetery in Belgium. William is gratefully remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo”, his picture is hung on the Memorial Wall in City Hall of Waterloo, Ontario. SNEDDON, Gail Linda Gail was born in London, Ontario on March 3, 1950. Being brought up as an Air Force brat and coming from a family on her dad’s side of both aunts and uncles being in the forces, she joined the Reserves as an older member at the age of 27 in May 1977 with 22 Service Battalion. Her dad forgave her for joining the army and outranking him. She became a vehicle technician and it was soon discovered she was a secretary in civilian life and thus she was cross traded as both a vehicle technician and an administration clerk. She obtained her trade qualification in both. She rose rapidly through the ranks to become an MWO. She sought release when no position in the unit was available. Gail was discharged in 1993. She has a son working for General Dynamics Land System with qualifications to drive their vehicles and her partner is LCol Brian Harris, Ret’d. She is the secretary for both Vimy Legion Branch 145 of The Royal Canadian Legion and Royal London Military Institute (RLMI).
