401 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SHEAHAN, Joseph Aloysius Joseph was born in Douglas, Ontario on October 8, 1925., He enlisted with the Navy during World War II in February 1944, and his service unit was Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve with the Esquirvall Ship. He went to RCI for six months then to Sudbury for a Telegraphy course. He then worked for CP Rail for 37 years. He married Edith McGowan in 1955. They had eight Children. Joe and Edith lived in Pembroke, Ontario and then moved to Brockville, Ontario. Joe was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Brockville Branch 96 for sixty years. Joe passed away on February 13, 2016. SHERK, Pearlous Erb Pearlous was born in Ayr, Ontario on February 11, 1895. He enlisted for World War I on March 14, 1916. His service unit was with the 160th Bruce Battalion and he served in England and France. On October 1, 1918 Pearlous went missing in action during the Battle at “Canal du Nord”. He was found October 4, 1918 and taken to hospital in England. Pearlous was discharged on February 15, 1919. On April 9, 1940, Pearlous enlisted for World War II. His service unit was the 12th Battalion Greek Force and he served in England and Italy until his discharge on March 16, 1944. Pearlous passed on May 6, 1962 and is buried in Chesley, Ontario Cemetery. SHEPPARD, Robert Francis “Bert” Bert was born on April 21, 1922 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was the youngest son of William James and Leonora (Thomey) Sheppard. Two of Bert’s brothers were in the service; Bill was with the RCA Blackwatch and Harry was with the RCN. News came home that the ship Harry was serving on was torpedoed and that he was one of 21 seamen killed in the attack. Notwithstanding this loss, Bert volunteered for service during World War II on July 30, 1942 and trained as a wireless operator. He served as a telegraphist on Corvettes doing convoy duty in the North Atlantic as well as Murmansk. While home on leave, Bert married his school sweetheart, Dorothy Mae (Kerr) on May 1, 1943. In February 1945, tragedy struck the family again as news arrived that his older brother Bill was killed in Germany. Bert was discharged on September 13, 1945 and he and Dorothy had a daughter, Sharon, a few years later. Bert worked for many years with Burroughs Business Machines; first as an accountant and then as Sales Manager at the KW Branch. Bert died unexpectedly of heart complications on March 15, 1976 at the young age of 52. His daughter Sharon and husband David Varley are members of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530.
