399 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SCRIMGEOUR, James Douglas “Jim” Jim was born in St. Jean, Quebec on August 30, 1929. He enlisted on September 28, 1950 with the Navy and served with HMCS Magnificent, HMCS Nootka, HMCS Bonaventure, USS Wasp, HS50, VS881 HSII. Jim served in Canada, High Seas, and The United States of America at Quonset Point, Patuxent River and Key West during the Korean War and Regular Force. He was discharged on April 8, 1969. He received several medals such as Canadian Forces’ Medal, Korea and United Nations Medal. Jim is now living in Almonte, Ontario. SHAW, John Donald Ponsford John was born in Toronto, Ontario on June 29, 1932. He moved to St. Thomas, Ontario with his parents. He was in the Army cadets for six years before joining the Elgin Regiment in 1954. He originally trained in the infantry but, when the Elgins were re-rolled into the Armoured Corps, he became a troop commander. Before retiring in 1981, John was Acting Commanding Officer of the Elgins. He was awarded the Canadian Forces’ Decoration with one Bar. He was the founding President in 1993 of the Elgin Regiment Association. John has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Byron Branch 533 since 1998. SCRIVEN, Joseph Walter “Joe” Joseph was born in Daysland, Alberta on February 15, 1918. Joe and Helen Fitchett married in 1940. He enlisted Royal Canadian Air Force on October 2, 1943. They moved from posting to posting with all their worldly goods in a small trunk by railroad. During their time at Fort Erie, Helen worked at Fleet Aircraft. Joe never served overseas, and he was discharged on December 19, 1945. In 1946, they returned to Thedford and Joe started building wooden extension ladders, also sheet metal duct work, and plumbing jobs. Joe bought Scriven Hardware Store and worked until 1985. Joe and Helen lived above the business until he passed away on August 8, 2004.
