391 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SAVARD, Cecil Edgar Cecil was born inArnprior, Ontario on March 21, 1911. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Canada and England during World War II. He was a Corporal Cook’s Assistant. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Almonte Branch 240. Cecil passed away on September 5, 1974. SAYERS, Harry William Harry was born in England on September 22, 1916. He came to Canada, specifically Richmond Hill, in 1924. Harry enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force on April 12, 1941, and completed his basic training in Clinton, Ontario. Upon arriving in the United Kingdom, Sergeant Sayers was seconded to the Royal Air Force where he became a highly secretive trainer on RADAR, first on the southern coast of England and then North Wales. He was returned by the RAF to Clinton during the war as an instructor. He was discharged from regular service and transferred to the RCAF Reserves on October 23, 1945. He resided in Richmond Hill with wife Phyllis and children Keith and Carol. A newspaperman before the war, Harry returned to this field as an editor with Maclean-Hunter Publishing. He then became a Copy Editor in the Advertising Department at Simpsons. He was elected as a Planning Board Chairman for many years in Richmond Hill in the late 1960’s. Harry was Life Member of Richmond Masonic Lodge, active with the local United Church and the local Hospital Association. Harry died on January 16, 1998 and his remains were interred in the Columbarium at Richmond Hill Elgin Mills Cemetery. SAWKA, Harry Harry was born on December 6, 1924 in Manitoba. In 1943, he enlisted with the Army serving with the Queens’ Own Rifles during World War II. Harry was wounded in action which resulted in the loss of a leg. He returned from overseas being discharged in 1945. Harry worked most of his life at Sunnybrook hospital in Toronto, working with patients fitting prosthetic limbs. He married Christina Clark and they had three children. Harry received the France and Germany Star, 1939-1945 War Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and 1939-1945 Star. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion. Harry passed away on April 7, 1999.
