387 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND RUSSELL, Charles Salvester Charles was born in Chicago, Illinois, United States of America on December 7, 1898. On January 18, 1916, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force Oxford’s Own 168th. Charles was still a student in Tillsonburg at this time. In his last letter home, he had written “Well, I don’t think this war will last much longer”. That was on April 3, 1918. Charles was killed in action twelve days later, on April 15, 1918, in the trenches west of Gavrelle. SANDERSON, Harold Arthur Harold was born on February 9, 1924 in Niagara Falls, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army in June 1941 at the age of sixteen. Harold did his training and served in Scotland, partly as a dispatch rider before going to France with the Cameron Highlanders (Ottawa). He was discharged in 1945 and returned home. After the war his father, Arthur, was able to find jobs with the railroad for his two sons and two sons-in-law. Harold later worked at Kimberly Clark and then McKinnon Industries GM. He was an avid sports fan and longtime hockey coach in Niagara Falls. Harold passed away on September 8, 1998 and was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 479 in Niagara. SAMS, Henry Allen “Hank” Henry was born on November 28, 1917 in Welland, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on December 3, 1941 with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry Sniper Scout Platoon (Wentworth Regiment). Henry landed in France and served throughout the European campaign in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was wounded in France and hospitalized in Bayeux then returned to active service. Henry was discharged on March 29, 1946. Henry received several awards such as the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 613 in Fonthill, ON for over fifty years. Henry passed away on February 5, 2014.
