365 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PURDY, William Harrison Edward “Harry” William was born in Almonte, Ontario on December 16, 1934. He enlisted with the Army on January 8, 1952, in Ottawa, Ontario, as a Master Vehicle Technician, and served with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. This led him to numerous postings such as Churchill, Manitoba; Petawawa, Kingston, and Gagetown, but the highlight of his military career was three separate tours to Europe with NATO. While deployed with overseas posting, he volunteered to be a Radio Broadcaster for the Canadian Forces Network representing Canada in Europe. His representation of interviewing and providing programs for radio stations enhanced the tours for the troops abroad and was recognized internationally. He retired on February 18, 1977 as MWO in charge of Base Maintenance, CFB Lahr, Germany. He stayed in Germany as CBC Broadcaster for CFN until NATO Base Lahr closed in 1994. Harry was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion in Carleton Place, Ontario. RANSBURY, Herbert John Herbert was born in Toronto, Ontario on August 2, 1916. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps on May 5, 1942 where he went through training primarily at Base Borden Ontario. He became part of the Engineering Bridge Corp erecting bridges for the front line throughout the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. His medals and decorations were 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was discharged on January 28, 1946 when he returned to Canada to his wife Marie Ransbury (Bolton) and firstborn daughter Joanne. They added two more children post war, Gail and Herbert Junior. He relocated toAlliston, Ontario after retirement where he resided until his passing on May 21, 1983. RABB, John Omer “Jack” Jack was born in Smiths Falls, Ontario on November 19, 1930. In November 1948, he enlisted in the Army with the Black Watch Militia and served in Canada during the Korean War. He was discharged in 1967. Jack was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Smiths Falls Branch 95 for 30 years, and was President of the Branch for a period, and also held the position of Veterans Service Officer for six years. Jack passed away November 11, 2013.
