359 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND POPE, John Stanley “Jack” Jack was born in Perth, Ontario on September 11, 1919. He enlisted in 1941 and completed his last tour on March 25, 1944. He served during World War II as a WAG LN 407 Squadron posted to Costal Command in England in November 1942, Anti Sub patrol in Bay of Biscay and U-Boat bomber in 1943 to 1944. Jack was discharged in 1945. After discharge, Jack worked for the Unemployment Office in Perth, Ontario with the displaced persons program when he first came home and remained with the Unemployment until he retired. Jack married Verna Paul in August 1947 and they had two daughters. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion in Perth, Ontario. Jack passed away January 4, 1978. PORTER, Clarence Russell Clarence was born on August 13, 1896 in Tara, Ontario. He worked as a clerk before enlisting in the Army during World War I. He enlisted with the Central Ontario Regiment 20th Battalion Infantry in Toronto on November 11, 1914 and served in Canada, England and France. Private Clarence Porter was killed in action in France on September 15, 1916. He is buried at the Vimy Memorial in Pas De Calais, France. POPE, William David William was born in Alresford, England on April 10, 1897. He joined the military during World War I on January 23, 1915 and received his training with 34th Battalion “B” Co. in Woodstock, Ontario. William was part of the 2nd Contingent and sailed to England on October 23, 1915. He was posted to Bramshott and transferred to the 23rd Battalion. On January 11, 1917, he arrived in France and joined the front lines on January 20. He was severely wounded to the legs by shrapnel on April 14, 1917 and was evacuated to Princess Elizabeth Hospital in Thorncliffe, England. He was discharged from hospital after 62 days and rejoined unit. He was granted fourteen days leave on October 19, 1918 and rejoined his unit. He was posted to Whitley, England and was hospitalized on February 20, 1919 with appendicitis. The demobilization of the CEF was in force and on May 31, William was posted to No 2 District Depot in Toronto. He was discharged on June 8, 1919. He joined The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 50 in Kitchener and then Waterloo Branch 530. William died in 1984 and is buried in the Parkview Cemetery in Waterloo and his name has been inscribed on plaque #3 on the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall.
