357 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PINDER, John Oscar John was born in Guelph, Ontario on March 25, 1916. Prior to the war, he served as a private in the RCASC for two years and worked in a machine shop in Hespeler, Ontario. He enlisted with the RCAF on August 6, 1940 and became a Corporal with the Service Police. He re-mustered to aircrew on November 19, 1942, and was trained as an Air Bomber, receiving his commission as a Flying Officer and was posted overseas, arriving in England on April 7, 1944. It was during further training in England that he was diagnosed as color blind and on December 19, 1944, he was transferred to the Reserve unit. It was noted in his transfer that he was “a good type of officer, who’s keenness was favourably commented on”. He was repatriated to Canada and placed on the Reserve List. He received a letter of appreciation from the Chief of Air Staff on March 24, 1945 as he was moved to the Reserves. Post war, he joined Bell Canada. He and his wife Helen raised two daughters, Sandra and Jo Anne. John passed away at his home in Richmond Hill on March 9, 1998 and was interred at Elgin Mills Cemetery. PLUNKETT, Eva Beatrice Eva was born in Brockville, Ontario in 1921. In 1940, she enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. She was on her way to Brockville, Ontario Air Base as a cook when she met her future husband Bill Martell, on the train. In 1944, she married Bill and returned to the Thedford area. They had five children. Eva worked most of her life as a cook and a faithful member of St. Paul’s Anglican in Thedford. She was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 278. Eva passed away March 1, 2009. PITT, Leslie “Les” Les was born in Toronto, Ontario on January 16, 1922. On March 3, 1941, he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force and served on Unit 3 Flight Instructor School Arnprior. He also served as a Flight Instructor at bases near Gander, NL; Dartmouth, NS; and Assiniboia, SK. He was deployed to England in 1945 and was discharged on July 12, 1945. Following the war, Les and his wife Jean (Wilson), farmed on the Grey Bruce Line near Chesley, and raised four children. He also worked for local Co-op stores. As well, he was active in the community serving as trustee on the Sullivan Public School Board, Board Member of the Grey Bruce Mutual Insurance Company, Board Member as well as President of the Ontario Federation of Cerebral Palsy. His leisure activities included board and card games and square dancing. Les passed away on January 29, 2016.
