355 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PHOENIX, Stuart Henry Stuart was born in London, Ontario on March 25, 1916 near London, Ontario. After completing London’s Beck Collegiate courses, he attended OntarioAgriculture College in chemistry in 1938. He then completed his teacher training and taught for one year. On June 22, 1940, he enlisted in the RCAF, and upon obtaining his wings and because of his teacher training, was chosen to become a Flight Training Instructor, rising to the role of Flight Lieutenant. Overall, his own training and instruction for young pilots took him to six different Canadian Bases. Overseas in 1943, he continued to train pilots in England. To conclude his service in Holland and in France, he was assigned to fly Mosquitos with the RCAF 410, Cougar Squadron. Stuart flew eleven different planes and logged over 2,500 hours. After discharge in 1945, Stuart taught courses to returning war veterans enabling them to complete their high school diplomas. He then taught in Africa for five years starting in 1947, and returning to teach in Ontario, concluding his teaching career with nineteen years at EESS in Aylmer Ontario. Stuart retired in 1973. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, General Star Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal (Maple Leaf), Pilot’s Flying Badge and Clasp. He passed away on July 19, 2002. PIKE, Wilfred Ernest Wilfred was born in Preston, Ontario on September 1, 1923. He enlisted on March 30, 1943 in London, Ontario with the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment. He served in World War II in the United Kingdom, Continental Europe and Central Mediterranean ending in Holland. Wilfred received the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was discharged in March 1946 and returned to his home inWoodstock, Ontario, there he married and had five children. He re-enlisted in November 1956, serving in Canada, the Arctic and post-war Germany. He retired on January 29, 1974. He was an active member of Scouts Canada and was a proud Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 278 in Thedford, Ontario. He passed away on January 22, 2011. The Army was his life and he attended two of the Holland reunions. PICARD, Leo Adolphus Leo was born in Peterborough, Ontario on April 20, 1896 to Joseph and Marie (Pitre). He was working as a Dry Goods Clerk when he received his draft papers to report to O.C. 1st Depot Regiment CEF in Kingston on March 13, 1918 to serve in World War I. He was posted to 77 Battery on March 23, 1918. He embarked from Montreal on June 25 and arrived in Liverpool, England on July 15, 1918. He was posted to Witley on August 13, then posted to Shorncliffe on January 7, 1919. The CEF was being demobilized and Leo was sent to Canada via the #9 Saturnia on July 25 and arrived in Montreal onAugust 4. Leo was discharged from Kingston Station H onAugust 8, 1919. Leo had two siblings, Marie (Alma) Picard and Major Romulus Emanuel Picard who died in World War I at the Battle of Fresnoy on May 3, 1917. Leo married Ernestine (McManus). He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530. Leo died on April 10, 1978 and is buried at St. Peters Roman Catholic Cemetery in Peterborough. His name had been inscribed on plaque #2 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall.
