349 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PEARSON, Archie Archie was born on September 29, 1925 in Welland, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on March 30, 1944 and served with the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada in Germany, England, Holland and Continental Europe during World War II. Archie was among the Canadian, British and Scottish Soldiers who were part of the allied efforts to fight their way into Germany as part of Operation Veritable. He was discharged on August 21, 1946 and returned home to Welland and was employed at Atlas Steel. He was married in 1947 to Audrey Richings and raised a daughter Jackie. He was awarded the France and Germany Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 613 in Fonthill, ON. Archie passed away on March 18, 2019. PETTIPAS, William Joseph William was born in Stellarton, Nova Scotia, on December 26, 1935. He started his military career with Army Cadets and the Militia. On graduation from university, on September 19, 1955, he enlisted and was assigned to 2 RHC in Gagetown, New Brunswick. William served in Germany for eighteen months and was then posted to the United Kingdom to attend the Tech Staff Course. After various postings, he was sent to Canadian Forces Staff College and then to Cyprus for a year as staff officer. On return from Cyprus, he was sent to NDHQ as a staff officer followed by a posting to 2 RHC as the Deputy Commanding Officer, which included six months in Cyprus. He was then selected to attend NATO Defence College in Rome. His next move was to London, Ontario as the CO of 1 RCR. After 28 years of service in the Regular Force, he was discharged on October 3, 1983. William retired and transferred to the Reserves and was appointed Commander of London Militia District. At this time, he took the employment with GM of Canada in London, Ontario. He retired from GM as a Vice President and Executive Director of the GM Defense. William is a fifteen-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 145. PENNINGTON, William William Pennington was born on July 23, 1889 in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancaster, England. His family moved to Canada and William was living in Winnipeg, Manitoba when he enlisted on June 26, 1915, with the Canadian Army and served with he 79th Cameron Highlanders Detachment Unit 43. William was sent to England then later to France where he served for three years. He was wounded in battle and returned to Ottawa then discharged March 24, 1919. William returned to Winnipeg where he met his wife Kathleen and they raised three children together. They returned to England to visit family and were unable to return to Canada because World War II broke out. William got a job in an ammunition factory doing his duty of building ammunition and continued to work until the war was over and they were able to return to Canada. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Newbury Branch 583. William passed November 4, 1987 in Newbury, Ontario.
