343 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND OSBORNE, Kenneth William “Ken” Ken was born on December 15, 1966 in Cooksville, Ontario. He married Alison Coburn of Chippawa, Ontario. He has one son, Kienan. Ken joined the military in 1993 and served for 24 years. Enrolling initially as a Training Development Officer, he became a lawyer and served in JAG. He served in Bosnia and on combat operations in Afghanistan. Deploying to Afghanistan twice, he was the lawyer to Canada’s Special Operations Task Force providing legal support to counter insurgency operations in Kandahar City. He deployed again as a legal mentor with the US Forces in Kabul. In this role, Ken supported the investigation of corruption matters involving members of the Afghan Army. This work included the investigation of attacks on coalition members, graft, and abuse of authority by senior members of the Afghan Army. Notably, Ken provided legal support to the investigation of the abuse of Afghan military personnel at the Daewood National Military Hospital in Kabul in 2010 (“the Horror Hospital”). For his service, he was awarded the United States Meritorious Service Medal. Leaving the military in 2017, he works at the Law Society of Ontario. Ken was appointed a Commissioner of the Ontario Soldiers’Aid Commission in 2017. OSTRANDER, Henry B. Henry was born in Ostrander, Ontario on July 11, 1896. He lived in the hamlet of Ostrander, north of Tillsonburg when he enlisted into the 168th Canadian Expeditionary Forces Oxford’s Own. Henry passed away on May 3, 1917 of shrapnel wounds while taking part in an attack on Fresnoy less than three months after he arrived in France. OSTELL, Richard Smith Richard was born on July 10, 1898 to John James and Sara Jane (Parker) in Carlisle, England. The family moved to Kitchener, Ontario, after receiving his education to be a plumber. Richard enlisted with CEF 118th Battalion Canadian Infantry on March 21, 1916. While serving in France he was injured by a gunshot wound to his heel and months later, received a shrapnel wound to his finger which was later amputated. Richard was discharged on September 17, 1919. He met Rachel Frey and they married in 1928 and had four children, Ruth Marie, John James, Kenneth Robert and Marilyn Catherine. They owned a summer resort property in Wasaga Beach and rented out cabins for many years. Richard passed away as a result of an accidental shooting at his home inWasaga Beach on January 1, 1947 at the age of 49. He is buried in the Soldier’s Plot at Woodland Cemetery. He would be proud to know that his daughter Ruth served with the Army in World War II and his son Kenneth served with the Canadian Guards. His wife Rachel and daughters, Ruth and Marilyn, became involved with the Waterloo Legion Ladies Auxiliary and each held lifetime memberships.
