297 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McALISTER, Vivian Charles Vivian was born in Dublin, Ireland on April 20, 1956. He enlisted with the Canadian Army in March 2008 and has served with 1 Canadian Field Hospital throughout Canada, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Haiti. He was discharged in April 2019. Vivian is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 145 in London, Ontario. McANDLESS, Fred Watson Fred was born in London, Ontario on September 28, 1895. He joined the Army on November 23, 1915. Fred began his training at Camp Borden. He then sailed to England and trained as a Signalman. After many months of training, he was finally shipped to Europe and attached to an Infrantry Regiment. The one story he told most often was about a raid by his Sergeant and Corporal of a German bunker where the Germans fled. The Sergeant collected most of the weapons, he and the Corporal divided up the other loot. He got a camera and three rolls of film. He took some great front line photos. He had his buddies take a couple of him, one of him running across a bridge with a fellow signalman and the flashing riffle shots from the enemy on the far side. He also told the story of his being shot in his right leg and was sent back to England to recover. He took a leave, travelled over to Ireland, and purchased a very fine Shillelagh. Unfortunately, the camera and all photos have disappeared over the years. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion in Ilderton. Fred passed away on October 25, 1963. McALLISTER, John Winfield John was born in Owen Sound, Ontario on January 25, 1922. On July 3, 1940 he enlisted during World War II with the Army with his service unit with Elgin Regiment. John served in the United Kingdom, Continental Europe, Central Mediterranean area. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, 1939 to 1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star and the Defence Medal. Upon his discharge on September 25, 1945, Comrade McAllister returned to the Huron County area and resumed farming with his sons, Neil and Dale. He was active in The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 468 in Hensall, ON, where he was a member for 65 years. He held the positions of President, 2nd Vice-President, 1st Vice-President, and was on the Bar Committee, Veterans Welfare and the Entertainment Community. He was awarded a Life Membership in 1994 and continued to support Hensall Legion Branch 468 until his death on March 19, 2014. Comrade McAllister published a book about his experiences, entitled “Life’s Been Good to John”.
