293 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MARTIN, John Alexander John was born in Tobermory, Ontario on March 19, 1884. He enlisted with the Army on March 20, 1916. John served overseas in World War I with the 160th Bruce Battalion and 6th Canadian Engineers. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Tobermory Branch 290. John passed away in 1973. MARTIN, Robert James Robert was born in Tobermory, Ontario on August 23, 1880. He enlisted with the Army on April 3, 1916. Robert served in France during World War I with the 160th Bruce Battalion and 5th Canadian Engineers. He also served in France. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 290. Robert passed away in 1969. MARTIN, Leslie Dingey “Les” Leslie was born in Toronto, Ontario on November 3, 1888 to Albert J. and Nellie Martin. Prior to the First World War, he was working as a printer. Leslie was married to Edith. He had 2½ years of former military training with 10th Grenadier Reserves and on May 19, 1916, he joined the Army with 70th Battery - Artillery in Toronto. He was hospitalized with tonsillitis on September 7, 1916 and after his recovery, he was shipped to England aboard the SS Mauratania in November 1916 and was dispatched to Shorncliffe and attached to the 82nd Howitzer Battery. After receiving training with the Artillery Battery, Les was shipped to France on May 15, 1917. On December 22, 1918, he received a fourteen-day pass to the United Kingdom and then returned to his unit in France. The military was starting to demobilize the CEF and Leslie was posted to England where he was later shipped back to Canada and discharged in Montreal on May 29, 1919. Leslie is deceased.
