291 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MARTELLE, Ezra Beaman Ezra was born on October 8, 1892 in Port Franks, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on May 2, 1916 and served with the 149th Battalion D Coy during World War I. At Grosvenor Park he had measles in the London Military Hospital in June 1916. He had his overseas medical at Queens Park on February 14, 1917, but then he had rheumatism from February 19-27, 1917. He was on the Lapland and to Bramshott. A curious thing was that he did the quarantine and was then admitted to the Connaught Hospital at Aldershot with the flu, which began April 21 and ran its course until May 31, 1917 when he was discharged to 25th Res Battalion. Ezra transferred to the 2nd Pioneers on October 14, 1917 and began his journey to them until being transferred to the 4th Battalion CE on June 5, 1918. Ezra did go to hospital but for Trench Fever. He spent months in various hospitals before finally being discharged back to duties on December 4, 1918. He went to Seaford CERD and was then sent to Kimmel Park on December 30, 1918. Ezra embarked for Canada on January 2, 1919 and demobilized on February 18, 1919. Ezra lived a long life as a civilian, passing away in 1985. MARTIN, Albert Leonard Albert was born in Tillsonburg, Ontario on December 25, 1913. He was employed as a drill press operator after he left Tillsonburg High School at the age of fifteen. He enlisted with The Irish Regiment in October 1942. Albert had to receive permission to marry in May 1943, a few days before he went overseas. While manhandling an Anti-Tank gun up the Savio Riverbank, it slipped off the road and struck a mine. Albert was badly wounded and later passed away on October 24, 1944. MARTELLE (LODATO), Monica Marie Monica Marie Ladato was born in Woodstock, Ontario on May 4, 1922. At the age of nineteen, she enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force stationed in Toronto and completed training in Guelph, Ontario. She was stationed in Ottawa at the Royal Canadian Air Force Station (Rockcliffe) for three and a half years. Monica returned home and married George Martell Junior. They raised five children and lived in the Thedford, Ontario area.
