289 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MARACLE, George Mark George was born on July 10, 1895, the son of Annie and Albert Maracle of Point Anne, near Belleville, Ontario. He enlisted during World War I on February 12, 1916 in Coldwater, Ontario with the Army’s 157th Overseas Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. For reasons unknown, he enlisted under the name George Mark Hill. George was twenty years old and single. Private Maracle sailed to England on the SS Cameronia, arriving on October 28, 1916. He joined his frontline unit in France, the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion, on November 29. Private Maracle was killed in action on April 12, 1917 during the battle for Vimy Ridge. He is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. Even though he enlisted and lived in Coldwater under the name Hill, he is listed on the Vimy Memorial as “GM MARACLE served as GM HILL”. MARTELLE, Ellery Burley “Bill” Bill was born in Bosanquet Township, Thedford, Ontario, in 1918. He enlisted with the Canadian Army during World War II. He was going to Halifax to head overseas when he met his wife to be Eva Plunkett. Bill was discharged in 1944 due to a broken back. He returned to Thedford, Ontario and married Eva. They had five children. Bill Worked for the Department of National Defence at Camp Ipperwash until he retired due to health issues. He served many positions in The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 278. Bill passed away March 1, 1993. MARSHALL, Jack H. Jack was born on April 13, 1924 in Toronto, Ontario. He was enlisted in the Air Force and served with 433 Squadron, 6 Group Bomber. Jack was a Flying Officer and Navigator for Halifax Bomber and served in 31 Bomber Ops in Europe and the United Kingdom during World War II.
