283 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MacLEOD, John Stanley John was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia on January 7, 1923, to Colin and May (Slocombe) and he had three brothers and six sisters. John’s father was a Corporal in a Machine Gun unit in World War I and fought in the Battle of Somme in 1916. John joined the Army June 13, 1940 during World War II and trained as a Wireless Radio Operator in a Ram Tank with the RCA 8th Field Regiment, 5th Division. He saw action in Italy, France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. In Holland, he took part in the Battle of Otterlo. He married Nancy Brockie on August 18, 1945 in Edinburgh, Scotland and they had two daughters. John was discharged on November 10, 1945. After the war, he remained with the Militia with the 6th Field Regiment, retiring from the Militia in April 1968. As part of a Government Delegation, he returned to the Netherlands for the 60th Anniversary of the Liberation and to Italy for the 70th Anniversary of the Italian Campaign. John was a charter member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 209 in Arvida, Quebec for 21 years as well as with Highland Creek Branch 258 Scarborough for five years. John passed away on November 26, 2018. MADDEAUX, Robert Robert was born on November 4, 1892 in New York City. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on February 17, 1916 and served with The Royal Canadian Dragoons in France during World War I. He received an honorable discharge on August 19, 1919 with the rank of Sergeant. Robert was awarded the War Service Badge Class A. Upon returning to Canada, he resumed his trade as a tinsmith and obtained employment with the City of Toronto where he worked until retirement. He became active in the municipal employees’ labor union and sat on the union executive for several years. Four of his sons, Bob, Nelson, Fred and Ron saw active duty during World War II. Robert passed away on August 2, 1962. MacNEILL, James Charles James was born on March 20, 1942 in Alberton, PEI. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on February 15, 1963. Following basic training in Cornwallis, NS, he was based at Shearwater Naval Air Station near Dartmouth, NS. At Shearwater, he trained as an air frame tech and subsequently sent to VS 880 Squadron. He also did two short stints of detached duty on American navy carriers USS Wasp and the USS Essex in 1964. In January 1965, James was posted on the HMCS Bonaventure aircraft carrier and took part in flying exercises in the Caribbean returning to Canada March 31, 1965. In April 1965, he sailed to Europe aboard the Bonaventure participating in NATO flying exercises, returning to Shearwater in July 1965 until his release in February 1966. Upon release, James moved to Toronto and worked for MacMillan Publishing, Copp Clark Publishing and the Toronto Star. In April 1968, James joined the RCAF Reserve at Downsview Air Base and was posted to 411 Squadron as an aviation tech doing maintenance on the Otter aircraft. He attained the rank of Corporal and remained with the 411 Squadron until release December 31, 1968. In March 1997, James joined the Corps of Commissionaires until his retirement in June 2012.
