277 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LOVELY, Leonard James Leonard was born on August 30, 1940 in Amherst, Nova Scotia. In 1960, Leonard enlisted with the Army as a Reservist serving with the Queens Own Rifles 48th Highlanders in Canada. He was discharged in 1962. He has been a resident of Halton Hills, Ontario since 1969. Leonard is a ten-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Acton Branch 197. LOWE, George Douglas George Douglas Lowe was born in London, England on July 8, 1918 to George and Nellie (Birch). When George was two years old, they moved to Waterloo, Ontario. George went to school at Alexandra Public School and then Kitchener andWaterloo Collegiate. He took Insurance Exams and worked as a clerk at Mutual Life inWaterloo. He enlisted with the Air Force in October 1939 and served during World War II. Sergeant Pilot George Lowe was attached to the 31 Service Flying Training School helping to prepare flight crew. On December 30, 1940, while stationed at RCAF station at Norman Rogers Airdrome near Kingston, Ontario, Sgt. Pilot Lowe and 21-year-old LAC Henry Levy from Toronto were killed in an air accident during a practice flight. Sgt. Low is buried in the Soldier’s Plot at Mount Hope Cemetery in Kitchener, Ontario. He is gratefully remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo” and his picture hangs on the Memorial Wall in the City Hall in Waterloo, Ontario. LOVETT, Algernon Philip Algernon was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on April 20, 1919. On May 14, 1937, Algernon enlisted with the Army as a machine gunner with the Princess Louise Fusiliers. He shipped out to England in September 1942 and fought in the Battle of Monte Cassino (Italy) from January to May 1944. At the end of World War II, he released and then re-enlisted and volunteered to deploy to Korea between April 1954 to January 1955. He remained in the Canadian Army with the 4th Battalion Canadian guards and deployed to Lebanon and Cyprus on UN Peacekeeping Duties from May to October 1966. Algernon also served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He lived in Forest, Ontario from 1954 to 1957 while stationed at Camp Ipperwash. He was discharged on October 16, 1971. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Fairview Branch 142 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Algernon passed away November 25, 1985.
