271 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LINDSAY, William Bethune William Bethune Lindsay was born on November 3, 1880 in Strathroy, Ontario. He was the second son of Dr. William Baltimore Lindsay and Mary Jane Cameron. He attended Strathroy Collegiate and Graduated RMC in 1900 and joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1904. On September 24, 1914, he enlisted at Valcartier, Quebec as Major with 1st Divisional Engineers to July 11, 1919 he was Major General, Army, Canadian Engineers (Canadian Corps Headquarters). He retired in 1920 Chief Engineer, Corps of Royal Canadian Engineers, Canadian Expeditionary Force; Europe; General Officer Commanding 1918, to the end of World War I. He was awarded with the military honors, Companion of the Bath, Companion of St. Michael and St. George, and the Distinguished Service Order. He passed away on June 27, 1933 at the Toronto Hunt Club and is buried in Strathroy, Ontario. LINSEMAN, Vincent Charles Vincent was born in Dorking, Perth County, Ontario on May 14, 1895 to John and Mary (Moser). Vincent married Margaret Olga Kraemer on January 22, 1918. He was drafted into the Army under the Military Service Act which became law on August 29, 1917 to help recruit reinforcements to support the war efforts of WWI. On May 27, 1918, Vincent proceeded to London, Ontario and reported to the 1st Battalion, Western Ontario Regiment. He passed the medical in London and was assigned to the Canadian Engineers in Niagara on the Lake. Due to demobilization of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, Vincent was sent back to London and discharged on December 7, 1918. He and Margaret had nine children: Wilfred, Cecil, Howard, Bernice, Earl, Liard (Larry), Donald, Eileen and Margaret. Vincent joined The Royal Canadian Legion Kitchener Branch 50, and then transferred to Waterloo Legion Branch 530 in 1953. Vincent died in 1955 in his 60th year and is buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Kitchener, Ontario. His son Donald and nephew James were also members of the Waterloo Legion. LINNER, John “Edward” Edward was born on July 6, 1922 at the family farm near Manson, Manitoba. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on March 16, 1943 in Regina, SK. He was stationed on Vancouver Island and served on HMCS Chignecto, a Mine Sweeper, which went on regular patrols up the Inside Passage to near Alaska, out into the Pacific and back to base. Each patrol lasted for three weeks. Edward was discharged on December 17, 1945. He returned to Manitoba, bought a farm, and in July 1949, he marriedAudrey Scott. They farmed for seven years before Edward enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in August 1956. He trained as an Electronics Technician at RCAF Clinton, ON in 1957. Edward served in St. Sylvestre, Quebec from 1958 to 1961 and in Flin Flon, MB from 1961 to 1964 and at RCAF Clinton as an Instructor of Electronics from 1964 until his medical release in 1968. Following his honorable discharge, Edward worked at Champion Road Machinery in Goderich, ON for 19 years until his retirement in 1987. Edward was an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion Goderich Branch 109 and the Navy Association of Huron County. Edward passed on August 9, 2000 at the age of 79.
