265 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LESPERANCE, Victor August Victor was born on August 18, 1934 in Windsor, Ontario, to Maurice Lesperance and Priscilla (Stuart). He had eight siblings: Marie, Edna, Lorenzo, Grace, Lorraine, Phillip and Anne. He married Susan Marie Vachon in May 1953 and they raised six children: Victor Jr, Brenda, Michael, Murray, Kevin and Angela. Victor served with the Navy – Regular Force in Canada during peacetime from 1956 to 1961 on Canada’s last aircraft carrier - the HMCS Bonaventure. Bonaventure handled a compliment of 1200 officers and crew during peacetime or 1370 officers and crew during war time. Initially, she had up to 34 planes and helicopters embarked at any time. The number of aircraft gradually reduced until the refit in 1967, when the air group peaked at 21 aircraft, including Banshee jet fighters and Grumman Tracker Anti-sub warfare jets and Sikorsky helicopters. Victor was a long-time employee of the Chrysler plant in Windsor and worked there until he retired. Victor passed away on April 26, 2003 in Calgary, Alberta at 69 years of age. LEWIS, Clarence Fred Clarence was born in Townsend Center Waterford, Ontario, on August 4, 1891, his parents lived in Tillsonburg at the time. He first enlisted into the Canadian Dental Corps during World War I as a dental surgeon. Clarence also enlisted for World War II when he was married and living in Toronto. At the age of 53, Clarence passed away on April 28, 1945 in Toronto of Carcinomatosis which is widespread of cancer throughout the body. LESTER, Robert Lee Robert was born in Eden, Ontario on August 23, 1923. He was living with his wife in Tillsonburg and working as a machine operator when he enlisted in the Army on November 2, 1942. He served in Italy with the Royal Canadian Regiment during World War II. Lester was involved with a successful crossing of a river in Italy, but the enemy began a large-scale tank attack at dawn. Some of the men were overrun and taken prisoner. Private Lester was later reported to have died in German hands. Robert passed away on December 5, 1944 at the age of 21.
