263 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LEDBURY, Benjamin Benjamin was born in Westbury, Wiltshire, England on January 26, 1889. He was “an Englishman and had no known relatives in Canada” according to the Tillsonburg Observer newspaper when they listed his death. Benjamin had been employed on the railroad when he enlisted with the CEF 18th Battalion of Woodstock on October 30, 1914. He served in France during World War I. Benjamin was killed in action on October 9, 1916 of multiple gunshot wounds near Rouen, France. LEIGH, Thomas Thomas Leigh was born on September 28, 1887 in Manchester, England. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Kingston, Ontario on November 13, 1915 enlisting with the CanadianArmy duringWorldWar I. He sailed to England aboard the S.S. Olympic. Thomas initially served as a private with the 59th Battalion and then joined the 21st Battalion where he earned the rank of Lance Corporal. While in France he was wounded and gassed and because of his injuries he was sent back to Canada and was discharged on May 4, 1919. Thomas died on April 11, 1957 and is buried in Erskine Cemetery in Pickering, Ontario. LEE, Stewart Everett Stewart was born in Lanark, Ontario on August 30, 1920. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 and served until 1945. He served in Odiham, England; Cain, France; and Eindhoven, Holland during World War II. His job included care and maintenance of camera guns on the aircrafts. The cameras operated automatically when the guns were fired, and the pictures were developed and sent to the Intelligence section of the Canadian Army. Stewart achieved the rank of Sergeant. Due to his long service record he was sent home prior to VE Day in Europe. He received an Honourable Discharge soon after the war ended. He was a member for over 65 years with The Royal Canadian Legion Almonte Branch 240. Stewart passed away on March 30, 2013.
