261 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LEATHERDALE, Arnot Thomas Arnot was born on June 12, 1897, the son of Luke andAmelia Leatherdale of Eplett Street in Coldwater, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army during World War I with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Kingston, Ontario on November 1, 1915. He was eighteen years old and single. Gunner Arnot Leatherdale crossed the Atlantic on the SS Metagamaand landed in England on January 9, 1916. By July 11, he found himself on the frontlines in France with the 3rd Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery. Gunner Leatherdale was killed on October 2, 1916 when an enemy shell exploded above his dugout near the village of Courcelette during one of the operations that would become known collectively as the Battle of The Somme. Gunner Arnot Leatherdale is buried at Pozières British Cemetery near Albert, France. LECKIE, John Alexander “Jack” Jack was born in Edmonton, Alberta on January 21, 1921. His family moved from Alberta in 1925 and he went to schools in Houghton, Vienna and Tillsonburg. He was working in his mother’s Kinglake store/post office when he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in June 1941. He served in Malta with 126 Squadron during World War II. Jack was stationed out of Safi airfield in Malta. However, he and his spitfire went missing on June 25, 1943 and did not return from patrol. LEBLANC Joseph Eloi “Joe” Joe was born in Cap Pele, New Brunswick on June 28, 1939. He enlisted in the Canadian Army Signal Corp on July 5, 1956, serving for 39 years in Canada, Egypt, Congo and Germany. After many years as CWO, nearing the end of his career, he was commissioned and retired with the rank of Captain. His medals and decorations included CD1, UNEF1, Congo, UNEFII, Queen’s Jubilee Medal. Upon retirement, he joined the Commissionaires, serving as JTF section supervisor at JTF Dwyer Hill. Joe was married to his wife Lorraine for fifty years and was a devout family man to his two children and five grandchildren. Joe was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Almonte Branch 240 in 1980, taking a very active role in the branch on various Executive Committees, Sgt Arms, Parade Marshall and Service Officer, devoting considerable time helping and advising Veterans to ensure that they received the medical, financial and emotional support they needed and deserved. He served as Branch President, Zone G6 Commander, Deputy Commander District G and Vice Chairman. His hard work and dedication resulted in him being awarded Life membership in 2002, MSM in 2007 and Palm Leaf in 2004. Joseph passed away on December 1, 2014.
