257 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LAFROMBOISE, Walter Joseph Walter was born in Ottawa, Ontario on January 1, 1918. He enlisted in the Army in 1940 and served with the Army Service Corps in Canada, England, France, Germany and Belgium during World War II. He remained in service for numerous years after the war. He was posted to Petawawa for a lengthy period. Along with his wife Alice, he was a long-standing member of The Royal Canadian Legion Pembroke Branch 72. LANG, William William was born in Coldwater, Ontario on December 18, 1896, the son of James and Martha Lang. On September 27, 1915, William enlisted in Toronto with the 81st Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was eighteen years old and single. Private William Lang sailed on the SS Olympic, arriving in Liverpool, England on May 6, 1916. After training in England for several months, he landed in France and joined his frontline unit, the 4th Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles, on June 29, 1916. On September 15, during fighting around Regina Trench, Private Lang was wounded but returned to duty five days later. He was killed in action on October 9, 1916, near the village of Pozières. Private William Lang is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, Pas de Calais, France, about eight kilometers northeast of Arras. LAIRD, John “George” George was born on October 5, 1918 on the second concession of Bosanquet Township and was the only son of Roy and Mary Ellen (MacLachlan) Laird. He enrolled with the Royal Canadian Air Force Kent Regiment with Non-Permanent Active Militia Chatham, on October 9, 1940 for training. He was stationed at Manning Depot, Toronto, and then at Montreal, Moose Jaw and Toronto. He was discharged on October 16, 1945 fromWolseley Barracks, London, Ontario. George returned to his family in Bosanquet, married Marjorie Atmore and had two sons. He worked his farm and took work off the farm at Lands and Forest Ontario. He was a Road Superintendent for the Township of Bosanquet and Ministry of Transportation, Northville Depot. George’s interests centered around his family, travel, his garden and reading. George was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Thedford Branch 278. George passed away on December 13, 1992.
