253 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KRUEGER, Norman Harvey Norman was born in Sullivan Township, Ontario on November 16, 1919. He enrolled in the 48th Highlanders and left for England on the Queen Elizabeth on June 8, 1941. He served with his unit in England, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany where he learned to drive big Diamond Tee Trucks before being discharged at the end of the War in 1945. On his return to Canada, Norman moved to Hanover, Ontario where he farmed and drove truck hauling bridging materials. He and his wife Florence had four children, Larry, Jerry, Ray and Debb. Norman Harvey Krueger passed away on April 2, 2001 at the age of 83. KUNTZ, William Joseph William Joseph Kuntz was born in Waterloo County, Ontario on July 26, 1918 to William A. Kuntz and Anges C. (Kaiser). He had one sister named Annie. After receiving his formal education, William worked as a clerk with Carling Breweries. He joined the Air Force in London, Ontario on January 22, 1942. Pilot Officer William Kuntz served his country for two years in World War II and died as a result of a flying accident while on active service in the United Kingdom on June 8, 1944. He is buried in Plot 49, Row 4, Grave 3 of the Brookwood Military Cemetery in Surrey, United Kingdom. He is gratefully remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo” and his picture hangs on the Memorial Wall in the City Hall in Waterloo, Ontario. KUFNER, Edward Edward was born in Zolkiew, Poland, on July 2, 1923. He enlisted with the Polish II Corps on December 3, 1941 during World War II. His service brought him to England, Middle East, Libya and Italy. After a light battle in Foggia, Italy in March 1944, the company Commander was badly wounded. He took over command and advanced toward Cerro San Vincenzo and with fourteen men destroyed two mortar positions and took over 25 prisoners. For this achievement, he received the Cross of Valour and was promoted to Sergeant. He was also awarded the War Medal 1939-1945, 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Defence Medal, and Italy Star. Edward was discharged on November 19, 1947. He is a sixty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Dambusters Branch 617.
