249 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KIPPER, Alexander Joseph “Alex” Alex was born in Berlin, Ontario on March 8, 1897 to Joseph and Martha Augusta (Litfin). On March 7, 1916, he joined the Army during World War I and was shipped to England after basic training aboard the SS Scandinavianwith the 118th Battalion. After further training, Alex was posted to France, and was moved to the frontlines. On November 6, during the Battle at Passchendaele, Alex was reported as missing. On November 7, he was located at the frontline aid station with massive injuries from a shell explosion. After surgery to remove metal from his torso and right leg, he was transported to Bramshott, England for further medical treatment due to concussion. The military was slowly demobilizing the CEF and Alex was posted to Kimmel Park pending return to Canada. L/Cpl Alexander Kipper was discharged in London, Ontario on January 21, 1919. After the war, Alex married Beatrice Ellen (Columbus) and they had five children. Alex died on April 26, 1978 and has been laid to rest at Mount Hope Cemetery in Kitchener, Ontario. He had been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Fred Gies Branch 50 in Kitchener for 25 years. KOLLEN, John William John was born on April 23, 1949 in St. Catharines, Ontario. John joined the Navy at seventeen on May 5, 1966 and did his basic training at HMCS Cornwallis. He served as an Electrical Technician on the following ships: HMCS Fraser, HMCS Huron, HMCSAthabaskan and HMCS Terra Nova. He also served at the following land establishments, Fleet Maintenance Group Atlantic in Halifax, Naval Radio Station Newport Corners, NS and 201 CF Technical Services Detachment in Montreal, PQ. In 1987, John retired as a Petty Officer First Class after almost 22 years of service. He then was integral in the construction of Halifax Class Frigates at Saint John, NB. He then moved to Ontario where he dabbled as a Quality Manager at ATC Meaford and as a technical writer for industry. He finally retired in 2004 and now resides in Hanover, ON. John is a 33-year Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Hanover Branch 130 and now serves as the Legion Deputy Zone Legion C3 Commander and best buddy to his grandchildren. KLOOSTERMAN, Harold Harold was born in Bergum, Newfoundland on January 12, 1942. On December 12, 1960, he enlisted as a Reservist and was a Trooper with the Queens York Rangers. Harold served in Canada and discharged on February 5, 1963. In 1964, Harold married Patricia Hannah and they had two girls. He loved the outdoors fishing, camping, and hunting. They also travelled all over the world. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 426, Newmarket for 48 years. Harold passed away on December 11, 2018.
