247 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KIDD, Keith Roy Keith was born in Sudbury, Ontario on March 20, 1922. He enlisted in North Bay, Ontario on February 25, 1941 to serve in World War II. Keith was overseas in September 1943 and was a pilot of a Halifax bomber during the major part of his flying career in England. Keith was promoted to Flight Lieutenant November 8, 1944. On one of Keith’s missions over France, his aircraft was struck from above by another aircraft. He was badly injured and sustained a broken arm and was cut above his eye. Although in great pain and blinded in one eye, Keith piloted his damaged aircraft to safety and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross from the Royal Canadian Air Force for his courage and bravery. Keith was discharged on March 20, 1946 and lived in Sundridge, Ontario. He and his brother Harold owned and operated a Hardware Retail Business until 1985. Keith was a lifetime member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 467 and passed away on February 24, 2000. KING, Elizabeth Elizabeth was born in North Shields, Northumberland, England, UK on February 16, 1938. In February 1956, she enrolled into the Women’s Royal Army Corps. 306 Northumbria Battalion and served until 1959 as a Stewart and a Batman. She won numerous prizes for Best Attender, Best Recruit and held the title for Best Dressed Soldier throughout her whole service period. In 1959, Elizabeth immigrated to Canada to live with her sister in Elliot Lake, Ontario for a period of two years. She planned on going back home and into the WRAC but decided to stay and make Canada her home and becoming a Canadian Citizen in 2005. She worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital as a cleaner and applied to Nursing School from which she graduated in 1964 as a Registered Nursing Assistant returning to the hospital in this capacity. She continued her career as an Operating Room Technician with University Hospital in London Ontario until retirement in 2000. She decided to rejoin the service enlisting with the Second Irish Regiment of Canada working as a medic and clerk. She later transferred to the 22nd Service Battalion retiring in 1993 as Warrant Officer. Elizabeth is a 34-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Vimy Branch 145. KIENAPPLE, Simon Simon was born in Wilmot Township in Ontario on March 3, 1896, to Henry and Elizabeth (Dorscht). Simon was drafted during the First World War and reported to the Army’s Western Ontario Regiment 1st Depot in London, Ontario on May 23, 1918. He was signed up and received basic training. Just as his Battalion completed their training and were ready to be shipped overseas, the war was ending, and demobilization of the Canadian Expeditionary Force had begun. Simon was kept on service to fulfill many duties and was finally discharged on June 25, 1919. He returned home to St. Agatha and farmed in the area all of his life. He married Margaret Hergott and they had three children: Earl Jerome (who married Dorothy Ertel and had four children: Albert, Larry, Theresa and Clare); Beatrice Catherine (who married Howard Schott and had three children: Barry, Brian and Debbie); and Marie Margaret (who married Edward Mason). Simon joined The Royal Canadian LegionWaterloo Branch 530 in 1955. He passed away on April 28, 1976 and has been laid to rest in the Roman Catholic Cemetery in St. Agatha, Ontario.
