237 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KAAR, Garfield Garfield was born in Brownsville, Ontario on February 23, 1897. He was an eighteen-year-old brick maker when he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force at St. Thomas on December 10, 1915. He served with 91 Battalion in Fresnoy, France duringWorldWar I. On May 5, 1917, Garfield was killed in action during an action to capture and try to hold the heavily fortified village of Fresnoy. That battle proved to be particularly costly for Tillsonburg soldiers as six of them died that first week of May. KAMEL, Sonia Victoria Sonia was born in Vita, Manitoba on April 27, 1945. On September 18, 1967, Sonia graduated as a Registered Nurse and enlisted in the RCAF. Following basic training, she was posted to Stadacona Naval Base in Halifax. From Stadacona, she completed a tour at an Army hospital and Iserlohn, Germany. With her return to Canada, Sonia completed a four-year posting to the National Defence Medical Centre in Ottawa. While in Iserlohn, she was one of the two dozen Registered Nurses working at the Military Hospital which was a combined British/Canadian facility. Her duties included looking after pre and postnatal needs of women living on and off base, and general nursing responsibilities to military personnel. While overseas, Sonia travelled to the Scandinavian countries, Cyprus and Lebanon including a visit to Check-Point Charlie, a key crossing point in Berlin during the Cold War. Upon her release from the Canadian Armed Forces on September 18, 1974, Sonia pursued further education and obtained a BA in Political Science and Economics and a certificate in Public Services. In Civilian Life, Sonia worked for the Anti-Inflation Board, Federal Transport Commission, Provincial Transportation with focus on transportation needs for persons with disabilities. Sonia is now retired and lives in Coldwater, Ontario. She is a one-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 270. KALBFLEISCH, Harold Robert Harold was born in the Waterloo, Ontario region on January 25, 1914 to Charles and Augusta Kalbfleisch. He was part of a large family and had two brothers and four sisters. After receiving his education, he found work as a clerk at a local business. He joined the Army on July 1, 1942 and was a Private with the Essex Scottish Regiment during World War II. While serving in France, on August 27, 1944, Rifleman Kalbfleisch died of wounds inflicted during combat. He is buried in Grave 2, Row B, Plot 21 at the Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery in Calvados, France and he is gratefully remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo”. His picture hangs on the Memorial Wall in the City Hall in Waterloo, Ontario.
