233 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND JOHNSTON, Charles “Charley” Charles was born in Kitchener, Ontario on May 18, 1980. He is a grandson of Robert Johnston, who served with the Canadian Army - 37 Seaforth Highlanders of Canada during World War II. He joined the Engineer Branch of the RCAF in 2014 and continued his military trade education at the Canadian Forces Fire and CBRN Academy, becoming a qualified airfield, crash/rescue firefighter and hazmat technician. Through joint training with FEMA, the US Department of Homeland Security, he’s now part of a global USAR response team, responding as a Technical Search Specialist and Structural Collapse Technician. He acquired his high angle and rope technician qualifications while serving in British Columbia. Charlie was one of 120 RCAF members specifically selected, based on merit to embark on a historic event in 2018, the only member selected to represent the RCAF Military Engineers as part of the first non-infantry contingent from Canada to take part in public duties for the sovereign in guarding Queen Elizabeth prior to and during the 100th anniversary of the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force. He was the first National Defence Firefighter in history awarded this tasking. During Operation Impact, Cpl. Johnston continues to serve Canada as a National Defence Firefighter, now on tour in Kuwait and Iraq. JOHNSTON, Robert Bruce Robert was born in Goldstone, Ontario on December 26, 1921 toWiddis and Jennie (Jackson). He had four siblings: Viola, Wilma, Olive and Harry. Prior to enlisting, he married Rita O’Rourke. On April 13, 1942, Robert enlisted with the Army and was part of the 37th Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. Corporal Robert Bruce Johnston served in the United Kingdom, Italy, North Africa and Europe during World War II and was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, 1939-1945 War Medal as well as the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Robert was discharged on January 17, 1946 and returned to civilian life in Kitchener. Unfortunately, he spent two years recovering at Freeport Hospital in Kitchener with complications due to Tuberculosis. Robert and Rita had eight children: Blake, Brian, Sharon, Bruce Jr., Brent, Judy, Gail and Joan. (Bruce Jr.’s son, Cpl. Charles Johnston, currently serves his country on Active Duty with the Royal Canadian Air Force). Robert worked with the Kitchener Fire Department from 1950 until his retirement. He died on December 27, 1988 at 67 years of age and is buried in Woodside Cemetery in Kitchener. JOHNSTON, Glenn Clyde Glenn was born in Lanark, Ontario, on January 27, 1936. He received his education locally. Glenn left school to go work in the bush for a while. He decided that a better life was out there somewhere, so he enlisted in the Canadian Army on the December 30, 1960 and joined the Royal Canadian Regiment. He took his basic training in London, ON and spent the next five years with the Regiment before remustering to the carpentry trade with the Royal Canadian Engineers. Glenn served in Chilliwack, Alert, Borden, London, Shilo and Ottawa. He retired out of Borden on November 7, 1986 and returned to the Lanark area where he worked at the Tay View Nursing Home in Perth for the next six years before becoming a volunteer driver for the County Transportation system. Glenn resides in Almonte now. He is a 26-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 395 Lanark and a past President of the Branch.
