223 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HUBBELL, George Henry George was born in Arnprior, Ontario on December 18, 1910 to Emily Charlotte (Bennett) and George Herbert Hugh Hubbell. He had one sister. His father died when he was ten years old. George continued with his education and married Phyllis L. Hubbell (Ruby) of Kitchener. Their union produced two daughters: Elizabeth Ruby and Charlotte Judith. On July 10, 1940, George enlisted during World War II at Toronto with the Royal Canadian Air Force - 420 Squadron. He trained and earned his Operational Wings. On July 10, 1943, Flight Officer George Hubbell left in a Wellington Bomber on a transit flight from the United Kingdom to NorthWest Africa. They were not heard from again and it is presumed the entire crew of seven lost their lives at sea during this mission on June 1, 1942. His service is commemorated on Panel 174 at Runnymede Memorial in Surrey, United Kingdom. He is gratefully remembered today as a Son of Waterloo and his picture hangs on the Memorial Wall in the City Hall in Waterloo, Ontario. HUMPHRIES, Gerald Donald “Gerry” Gerry was born in Bosanquet Township, Thedford, Ontario, on January 18, 1924. He enlisted with the Canadian Army in 1941. As a Tank Commander, Gerry had a close encounter with the German Panzer Tank, they almost met on a crest of a hill. They made it over not to be spotted. Gerry served in Italy, France, Germany and England during World War II. After the war, he was stationed in London, Ontario, where he met his wife Betty. They raised two children. After the war, Gerry and Betty returned to Germany and was also involved with Suez Canal Crisis before returning to Canada. Gerry retired in 1976. He was a volunteer for Vancouver Island, Fire Department for 25 years (North Saanich). Gerry passed away on September 1, 2008. HULSEMANN, John Martin John was born in Wapella, Saskatchewan on June 14, 1931. After four years of cadet training at RRMC/RMC and Basic Artillery Training (1951-1954), he was posted as a Lieutenant to 3RCHA in Korea and then to Camp Debert, NS. After completing academic training at the University of Saskatchewan and more regimental duties with 3RCHA, he had further training in Shilo. Posted to 2RCHA and promoted to Captain, this allowed him to be the BC of the Locating Battery. He was also a Squadron Officer to RMC. Staff Posting in Brigade HQs in Petawawa and Germany were split, a twoand-a-half-year exchange, posting to the West German General Staff College in Hamburg. Promoted to Major and returned to Canada, he held several Staff Position in Shilo, the Western & Training Command HQs and then became the Ops and Training Officer at Prairie Militia Area HQ in Winnipeg. On release from the Regular Force, he worked as a translator in D (Int), HQ DND Ottawa. Recalled into Class C Service, he served as a ProgramAnalyst in the Adm (Pol) section. John retired in 1984 and resides in Smiths Falls, Ontario. John was awarded several medals: Korea Medal, UN Service Medal, UN Medal Palestine, Canadian Centennial Medal 1967, Canadian Forces’ Decoration and Clasp, and Ambassador for Peace Medal Korea.
