219 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HOLLINGSHEAD, Jack Ewart Jack was born on January 24, 1925, in Culloden, Ontario. Private Jack Hollingshead’s parents lived in Ingersoll but were in Culloden when Jack was born. While serving with the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders, he was killed in action onApril 12, 1945 in the Netherlands, 26 days before the war ended. Jack has been buried in Holten CanadianWar Cemetery in North East Netherlands. HOOPER, Ernest Ernest was born in London, England on January 21, 1889. He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force 5th Battalion on September 24, 1914, which brought him to serve in France during World War I. Private Hooper was also known as Edgar Hooper and as Norman Heath during his military career; both names appear in his file. He immigrated to Canada in 1909 and was employed as a farmer in Tillsonburg area. As “Norman Heath” he enlisted at Valcartier in September 1914. Serving in France with the 5th, he was killed in action on May 24, 1915 during the capture of the town of Festubert. HOLLOWAY, James Francis “Jim” Jim was born on August 4, 1935 in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, where he lived with his eight siblings and very loving parents. With a desire to travel and serve his country, he enlisted in the service at 19 years of age and was placed in the Fourth Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery and sent to St. George, New Brunswick for training. In 1955, Gunner Holloway and his regiment were stationed inWest Germany where they served as Peacekeepers and to assist the neighbouring infantry unit. Jim was in the forces for three years where he gained a strong knowledge of different types of artillery. We often hear him say, “joining the army was one of the best things I ever did”. Upon his discharge in 1958, Jim returned home to his sweetheart Maggie, to whom he has been happily married for 59 years and counting. Jim continues to be a supporting member of The Royal Canadian Legion and holds the utmost respect for the military.
