215 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HINDS, Herbert Private Hinds was born on March 6, 1891, in London, UK. On January 3, 1916, he enlisted in the Army in Kitchener. He listed his occupation as a laborer. He was a member of the 118th North Waterloo Battalion and was to sail to Britain on the SS Lapland but missed the passage as he was in the Halifax Hospital with chronic sinus problems. These problems plagued him since 1913. He later sailed on the SS Missanabie. Upon arrival, he was transferred to the Canadian Army Medical Corps and into the 3rd Canadian Field Ambulance as a reinforcement. He spent over six months training and working in Britain before being sent to France and Belgium. However, Herbert’s service was cut short. He spent most of the remainder of the war in and out of hospital for nasal polyps, chronic sinusitis, and turbinectomy. When the war ended, he had to wait until well after the Armistice before being returned to Canada. He was discharged on May 17, 1919 after a safe return home. HOBACK, Walter Harlen Walter was born in Ravenscrag, Saskatchewan on June 16, 1916, the son of James Harlen Hoback and Elizabeth Daniels. When World War II broke out, he enlisted in the Canadian Army No 20 Basic Training Camp. He was assigned to the Dufferin and Haldiman Regiment, 69th Field Battery attached to the Home Guard and assigned machine gun and guard duty at the Chippawa Canal and Power Dam. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Galt Branch 121. Walter passed away on December 27, 1967 in Galt, Ontario. HOARE, Michael John Michael was born in Stockport, England on February 5, 1945. He enlisted on September 26, 1961. Michael served in both the Army and the Navy with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps, HMCS Prevost, and NRHQ, and served in Canada and Germany. He was discharged on February 5, 2005. Michael has been a 42-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Vimy Branch 145.
