211 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HETHERINGTON, Doris Isabelle Doris was born in West Brook, Nova Scotia on April 4, 1925. She enlisted in June 1943 with the Royal Canadian Air Force Women’s Division. She was discharged in April 1946. Doris was active in The Royal Canadian Legion Chesley Branch 144. She was President of the Branch and was also President of the Ladies Auxiliary. Doris passed away in 1987. HEWITSON, William Thomas “Bill” William was born in Bentinck Township, Grey County, Ontario on December 22, 1904. He enlisted in the 97th Field Battery, The Royal Canadian Artillery, in Walkerton, ON right after the war started in 1939. Bill was the first soldier from Desboro, Ontario in uniform in World War II. He was a gunner and served seven years with the 97th Field Battery, sailing from Halifax in late 1941. In England, in late 1943, it was disbanded when the 7th Canadian Medium Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery was formed. Bill served with the 7th Medium Regiment in Northwest Europe. After the war, he worked for Brewers Warehouse in Walkerton, and for Ontario Hydro at Elliot Lake, ON. Bill was married late in life and had no children. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Chesley Branch 144. William passed away on November 5, 1983 and is buried in Chesley Cemetery in Chesley Ontario. HEWGILL, Clifford William Clifford was born on September 21, 1897 in Collingwood Township, Grey County, Ontario. On July 31, 1916, he enlisted with the Army during World War I and served with 147 out of Owen Sound in England and France. He turned eighteen years old while serving in France. Clifford was discharged on April 4, 1919 and returned home to the farm to raise his family of three children. He was a charter member of The Royal Canadian Legion Beaver Valley Branch 281 in Clarksburg. Clifford passed away on February 19, 1968.
