209 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HERGOTT, Wilbert Nicholas Wilbert was born on November 2, 1921 to Peter and Emma (Walz) in Waterloo. He attended school in Kitchener, along with his brothers Raymond and Gerard who also served during World War II. Growing up, he enjoyed all sports, but his favorite was hockey. Wilbert worked as a clerk at CPR Telegraph prior to enlisting in Hamilton on February 21, 1941. He was first stationed at St Hubert, Quebec and then proceeded overseas with the RCAF and took pilot training. While overseas, he spent some time in the Army, receiving training in connection with the scheme of coordinating the Army and Air Force services at that time. Sgt Pilot Wilbert Hergott died during active service in the United Kingdom on June 12, 1942, at the age of 20. He was the tenth man from Waterloo to lose his life in the service. Wilbert is buried in Section H, Grave 33 East at the Leuchars Cemetery in Argyllshire, United Kingdom. He is gratefully remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo” and his picture hangs on the Memorial Wall in the City Hall inWaterloo, Ontario. HERTZBERGER, David Norman David was born on July 22, 1923 in Centreville, Ontario, to William and Laura Hertzberger. He grew up with six brothers: Charlton, James, Randall, Edward, Ross and John; he also had three sisters: Elise, Helen and Miriam. After receiving his schooling, David worked as a Mason by trade. At almost 20 years of age, he enlisted in the Army’s Essex Scottish Regiment on April 28, 1943 in London, Ontario. Private Hertzberger served in Canada, United Kingdom and Northwest Europe before he was killed in active service on April 13, 1941. He is buried in Grave 15, Row E, Plot 10 at the Holten War Cemetery in the Netherlands. He is gratefully remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo” and his picture hangs on the Memorial Wall in the City Hall in Waterloo, Ontario. HERRIOT, Gordon McLean Gordon was born in Warkworth, Ontario on May 29, 1925. He enlisted with the Air Force Reserve Class E on July 27, 1943. Gordon served in Canada and received the Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 133 Cobourg. Gordon passed away on October 23, 2003.
