207 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HEMSTOCK, George Malcolm George was born on February 23, 1926, in Arran Township. He enlisted in the Canadian Army and was a Private in 2DD Unit. George was discharged in 1946. Prior to his return, George worked in the logging industry in the West. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Tara Branch 383 for 42 years. George passed away on October 30, 1992 and is buried at Hillcrest Cemetery in Tara. HERGOTT, John Matthew John was born on February 11, 1902 in Hespeler, Ontario, to John Theobald Hergott and Mary Elizabeth (Starr). He had three brothers - twins Marcellos and Cyril and an older brother, Carl. All of the Hergott boys were involved in the World War II effort. Marcellos was a Corporal with the Air Force in Regina, Saskatchewan; Cyril was a Corporal with RCEME Canadian Army Overseas; and Carl was a Private with the Army. On October 15, 1942, John enlisted with the Canadian Army in London, Ontario and served in the United Kingdom and Northwest Europe. He was granted special permission for leave to marry Anna Lawley (Cahill) in May 1943. The following year they had a daughter named Mary Elizabeth, but she sadly died two days after she was born. Lance Corporal John Hergott was killed during active service in Germany onApril 16, 1945 and is buried in the Holten War Cemetery, Netherlands in Grave 16 Row F, Plot 6. He is gratefully remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo” and his picture hangs on the Memorial Wall in the City Hall in Waterloo, Ontario. HERGOTT, Gerald Albert Gerald was born on October 16, 1923 in Waterloo, Ontario, to Peter and Emma (Walz). He attended school in Kitchener, along with his brothers Raymond and Wilbert who also served in World War II. Gerald worked in sales at Lang Tanning for a while and then as a shoe cutter for Valentine & Martin Shoe Company. He enlisted in the Air Force on November 19, 1942. As part of RCAF 427 Squadron, he trained in Canada and served as a Pilot Officer in England. On March 30, Pilot Officer G.A. Herbert and crew were detailed to carry out a night bombing attack on Nuremburg, Germany. Their Halifax Bomber failed to return to the aerodrome, and they were subsequently reported missing fromAir Operations. The plane and crew (F/OA.E.E. Groundeau, navigator; F/O D.W. Hammond, bomb aimer; F/Sgt. R.H. Beach; P/O F.A. Hergott, gunner; Sgt L.M. Hawkes, rear gunner; and Sgt. A.T. Williams, flight engineer) were later recovered. They are buried in a collective grave (6# 8-14) in Hanover War Cemetery in Germany. Pilot Officer Gerald Hergott was considered killed in action on March 31, 1944. He is gratefully remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo” and his picture hangs on the Memorial Wall at City Hall in Waterloo, Ontario.
