515 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND WISMER, Laverne Bell “Vern” Vern was born inYork Township, Ontario on May 22, 1917 to Samuel and Katherine Wismer. He had four brothers and a sister. His brothers Jack and Stewart both served with the RCAF during World War II. At 24 years of age he enlisted in the Army leaving his girlfriend Eileen to wait for his return. Vern was a Signalman with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals, trained to fix radios. He lived and worked out of an army truck filled with all the equipment he needed. Guys would often come by the truck at night and play cards and listen to music. Along with frequent letters, Eileen would ship Vern large parcels filled with cookies, spices and jam that she knew he would share with all his army buddies. Vern was stationed on a mountain in Italy on April 28, 1944. He left shelter to get water from a creek when he was killed by sniper fire. Signalman Wismer is buried in the Cassino War Cemetery in Italy. He is gratefully remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo” and his picture hangs on the Memorial Wall in the City Hall in Waterloo, Ontario. WOOD, Dennis Harold Dennis was born in London, England on January 22, 1922 to Sergeant Fred H. (Veteran of World War I) and Dolly (Hilton) Wood. He spent his early years in London until he enlisted in the Royal Air Force and was posted to Canada as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. He was posted across Canada from the Service Flying Training School in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, the Flying Instructor School in Vulcan, Alberta, the Air Navigation School in Goderich/Port Albert, Ontario and finally to CFS Debert, Nova Scotia where he trained to fly Mosquito aircraft prior to being posted back to England as a Flight Lieutenant in May 1945. He was awarded the Defence Medal and the War Medal 1939-1945. He died at 96 years of age on July 15, 2018, having retired in 1989 as Vice-President and Assistant to the CEO of National Life Assurance Company. WOLOSHYN, Richard E. Richard was born in Cudworth, Saskatchewan on February 17, 1943. He enlisted on April 11, 1961. He served with the RCASC, HMCS Huron and HMCS Assiniboine as a Logistics Officer, Army officer, Naval Officer and Air Force Officer (Res). He has worn all four uniforms including Integration Uniform. He was discharged on February 17, 1998. Richard is a five-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterford Branch 123.
