505 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND WHITSON, Francis Edith Edith was born in Maidstone, Ontario on May 26, 1910, the daughter of Thomas and HelenWhitson. She grew up in Essex, Ontario and attended school there. She enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on March 21, 1942 and served as a nurse in Prince Rupert, BC during World War II. She was discharged on November 2, 1945. She returned to the Essex area until retirement then moved to Port Hope, Ontario to live with her sister Margaret Porter until her passing on May 27, 1997 at the age of 86. WIGGINS, Karen Grace Karen was born in Toronto, Ontario on December 14, 1954. She enlisted in the Navy in September 1972 and served as Admin Clerk, HMCS York. She served in Trenton and Borden, Ontario as well as Halifax, NS. She married on Parade Square at HMCS York in April 1977. Karen is a twenty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 216, Petrolia. WICE, Russell Thomas “Rusty” Russell was born in Thornhill, Ontario on November 26, 1920. He enlisted in the Army on July 10, 1940. Physical description on enlistment: 5 feet 8 inches tall; 145 lbs.; blue eyes; brown hair and fair complexion. He listed his trade as a gardener and had recently graduated high school. He was raised in Thornhill and his mother, Julia Wice, participated in the unveiling of the war memorial tablet at the community pool on Centre St. in Thornhill. Private Russell Thomas Wice was killed in action in Dieppe on August 19, 1942 while serving with the Royal Regiment of Canada. “Rusty” is buried at the Dieppe Canadian War Cemetery in Hautot-sur-Mer, France. He was good friend of Private William John Findlay who was also killed in Dieppe.
