503 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND WHITE, Ernest Griffith Ernest was born on December 20, 1918 in Toronto and enlisted in the Air Force on December 26, 1940. He listed his occupation as a Butcher with Kerr’s Meat Market in Richmond Hill and stated that his employment preference after discharge was as a Wireless Operator. Physical description on enlistment: 5 feet, 11¼ inches tall; 145½ lbs., blue eyes; brown hair and dark complexion. His medical was completed on November 4, 1940 in Richmond Hill by Dr. James Langstaff. Flight Sergeant Ernest Griffith White went missing in action on July 28, 1943 while on air operations over Germany while serving with the RCAF. Ernest is buried in Kiel Cemetery, Germany. His name is inscribed on the Richmond Hill cenotaph and he is also commemorated on a plaque in St. Mary’s Anglican Church. WHITE, William Norman “Norm” William was born on July 2, 1923 in Inwood, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on July 3, 1941 with the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders. He served in Newfoundland, England, Normandy, Holland and the Atlantic during World War II. He was wounded at Normandy Beach and in Holland a second time. He was shot in the head on Juno Beach and survived. In Holland he was run over by a tank and wore a leg brace for most of his life. He was discharged in 1945. He was a Royal Canadian Legion Life Member of Branch 216 Petrolia. William passed away on October 2, 1995. WHITE, Robert Norman Robert was born in Petrolia, Ontario on July 11, 1949. After two years in the Royal Canadian Navy, Robert was honourably discharged and joined the US Navy. He served on the USS Bennington CV520 then the USS Kitty Hawk CVA65 (both aircraft carriers) VPI (Patrol Squadron One) TRI (training Squadron One). He was discharged on October 28, 1972. He earned the Vietnam Star, Vietnam Combat Medal, Cross of Galantry and the National Defence Medal. He is a 48-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion West Lorne Branch 221.
