501 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND WEST, Stanley Stanley was born on September 7, 1895 to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph West. He was baptized on February 9, 1896. He enlisted in St. John’s, Newfoundland on April 23, 1915. His trade was Woodsman and he was being paid $26 a month. At enlistment, his physical details: 5 feet 6 inches, 120 pounds; Chest 31 ½ expansion 4 ½ inches. It was observed that his tonsils were slightly enlarged; Distinguishing marks: scar on right wrist; hair - brown; eyes grey brown; colour - dark. He was drafted to the 2nd Battalion, Newfoundland Regiment in the 4th draft. He embarked St. John’s for overseas on June 19, 1915 on SS Calgarian. He disembarked in Rouen, France on April 8 1916, joined 1st Battalion in the field on May 4, 1916. Private Stanley West went missing in action on July 1, 1916 at Beaumont-Hamel, France in the Somme while serving with the Newfoundland Regiment. WHEELER, Vernon Alexander Vernon was born on September 14, 1902 in Crieff, Ontario. He enlisted in the Navy and served on the Canadian High Seas on HMCS Swansea and HMCS Ottawa during World War II. Vernon was a Chief Petty Officer on the HMCS Ottawa when it sank off the coast of Newfoundland on September 14, 1942 by a German Submarine U91; 76 men survived but sadly 137 were lost. Vernon always said if he had not come up top for a smoke at the right time he would have been one of the 137. He was discharged in 1945. He was a 45-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Acton Branch 197. Vernon passed away in 1995. WHEATON, Clayton Edgar “Clay” Clay was born on January 10, 1941 in Clarendon, NB. He enlisted in the Army on September 22, 1959 with the Royal Canadian Signals and served in Canada. Clay retired as a Major and was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration and Bar and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. He was discharged on October 12, 1989. Clay was a Royal Canadian Legion charter member of Kanata Branch 638 and has been a very active member throughout its existence and his support of the Branch has been recognized by the award of the Legion MSM.
