499 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND WENSLEY, Alexander George Alexander was born in Weston-Toronto, Ontario on February 10, 1925. He enlisted in the Army in 1943. He was in the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Regiment. He trained in Cornwall, Ontario. Alexander travelled by ship to Liverpool, England for two weeks and then into France and Belgium. He was billeted in Nieubury, Holland. Alexander was injured and sent back to England to hospital, then back to France for active duty. After the war, he came home with Queens Own Rifles. He went to Acton and rented in the war time housing through Veteran Affairs to raise his family, one boy and two girls. He began to work for Orenda in Milton, Ontario. Alexander was a member of the Acton Legion Branch 197 and passed away on February 14, 2017. WEST, Edward Edward was born in Aspey Cove, Fogo District, Newfoundland. He enlisted in St. John’s, Newfoundland on May 31, 1915. His mother Mrs. Rose Shelley was a resident of Aspey Cove, Fogo District, Newfoundland. His trade was Fisherman and he was paid $250/year. At enlistment, his physical details were: 5 feet, 9 and 3/4 inches, 157lbs, light hair, blue eyes; colour-fresh. He embarked from St. John’s for overseas on June 19, 1915 on SS Calgarian. He then embarked from UK for France on March 28, 1916 and joined the Newfoundland Battalion in the field on April 13, 1916. Private Edward West was missing in action on June 28, 1916 at BeaumontHamel, France in the Somme while serving with the Newfoundland Regiment. This was two days before the infamous July 1 attack at Beaumont-Hamel where the Newfoundlanders were almost decimated. On November 23, 19165 his mother was informed by letter from the Colonial Secretary that “Edward now presumed killed in action.” WERON, Roger Stanley Roger was born on January 12, 1976 in Prudnik, Poland. He enlisted with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry Reserves in October 1993, before transferring to the regular force with the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in 1995. He served with 2RCHA in Petawawa, Ontario from 1995 until 2009, where he was subsequently posted to LFCA TC Meaford. Roger also trained soldiers of various trade elements for Canada’s defence while posted to (LFCA) Land Force Central Area Training Centre in Meaford, now known as 4th Canadian Division Training Centre. Roger retired with 25 years of service in November 2018. His decoration and awards include two tours in formerYugoslavia (Bosnia), three tours inAfghanistan, (CD1) the Canadian Forces Decoration for 25 plus years of service, the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal, along with the Commander and Chief Commendation, awarded for (TF) task force 3-06 in Kandahar. Roger retired with the rank of Sergeant having obtained many trade related courses. He lives in Owen Sound, Ontario.
