487 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND VIDEAN, John Benson “Jack” Jack was born in Goderich, Ontario on January 6, 1914. He joined the Army in June 1940 motivated by duty and patriotism. He hit the beach after the initial June 6 DDay invasion of Normandy. After three days of action he was wounded. Then he was shipped back to England for treatment. He recuperated near Hull. He then joined the infantry and sent back to training camp. From training to Antwerp, he went with the Algonquin Regiment with men mainly from Sault Ste. Marie-North Bay. November 27, 1944 a cold wet night was one of the most tragic episodes for the Algonquin patrol of the thirty men, nine were killed, twelve wounded and nine uninjured. He returned from the war and became a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 109, Goderich. Jack passed away on November 20, 1999. WADDELL, John Campbell John was born in Toronto, Ontario on October 24, 1925 to Mary and James Waddell. He and his sister Margaret were twins. He had two more brothers, Douglas and Melville, another sister Helen. He joined the naval service in 1943. He went to Sydney, NS to complete his training. They went to Liverpool, England, Scotland, Ireland and then to get their new ship, HMCS Ontario, on to Gibraltar, Malta, Suez Canal, Colombo, Singapore and Hong Kong for eight weeks. Then they went to Manila, Guam, Hawaii and Vancouver, BC and home by train in 1945. Upon return, he went to trade school and became a plumber. He joined and was a 32-year member of the Naval Reserve, HMCS York. He met and married Myrtle in June 1948 and they had two daughters, Linda and Joanne. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Brigadier Martin Branch 345 in Toronto for fifty years. He received the following medals: Burma Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the Victory Medal and CF, CO and Bar. John passed away on June 16, 2018. VILLENEUVE, Francis Joseph Francis was born in Pembroke, Ontario on January 5, 1923. He enlisted in the Army on April 9, 1941 and served in Canada, United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean area and Continental Europe during World War II. He was discharged on November 15, 1945 and received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and 19391945 Star. He re-enlisted in the Canadian Army (active) on October 1, 1946 until June 14, 1948. Francis married Lois Woolgar and they raised ten children. He was a welder until he was 65 years old. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 560 in Kingston for 33 years. Francis passed away on April 30, 2015 in Kingston, Ontario.
