467 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SUMMERFIELD, Alfred Alfred was born on March 26, 1888 in Lambeth, London, England. He was the son of William and Eliza, husband of Emma and father of Kitty and Alfred of Wallaceburg, Ontario. Private Summerfield enlisted in World War I on March 27, 1916 in the 18th Battalion, Western Ontario Regiment of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces. He served in England, France and Canada. On November 11, 1917, Alfred was killed in action. His name is inscribed on the Menin Gate Memorial in Belgium and also on the war memorial in Wallaceburg, Ontario. SUTCLIFFE, Karen Ann Karen was born in Montreal, Quebec in 1953, the daughter of Reginald (WWII Veteran Royal Rifles) and Ivy (Veteran WWII RCAF WD) Sutcliffe. She began her military career in 1968 to 1971 in the Navy League Wrenette Corps at HMCS Donnacona. No other cadet organization would accept girls at the time. In 1971, she joined CWAC and Black Watch (RHR) of Canada, 3rd Battalion successfully completing GMT, the sole female in a platoon of thirty men. Subsequently, she completed Leading Infantryman Course. This effectively made Canada’s first female Infantryman (Reserve). Karen served as Lance Corporal, Infanteer and Radio Operator until 1973 when she joined the Regular Forces. Her postings included CFB’s in Montreal, Cornwallis, Borden, Trenton, Kingston and Ottawa. She was trained as a Base Defense Forces Member, Radio Operator and Admin Clerk. She was a RCAC Cadet Instructor in Skill at Arms and fieldcraft. In civilian life, Karen married and raised two sons and a foster daughter and is a grandmother of two. She was a Nurse, a Social Worker, civil servant, City Counsellor and WSIB Claims Adjudicator from which she retired after 28 years. She gives talks to Veterans and service groups about Veterans and Service Dogs. Karen is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Riverside Branch 255 in Windsor. SUMMERS, Ronald Henry Ronald was born on October 23, 1924 in Peterborough, Ontario. He was the son of the late Henry Charles James Summers who served in World War I. Ronald enlisted in the Royal Canadian Artillery at Kingston, Ontario on October 28, 1942. In April 1944 he joined The FSSF, also known as the Devil’s Brigade, an elite group of soldiers handpicked from Canada and the United States that was formed under strict secrecy and was deployed quietly to trouble spots overseas during 1943 and 1944. Under amphibious training in Helena, Montana, Ronald served in Anzio Beachhead Italy, participated in the capture of Rome on June 4, 1944 and the Southern France Invasion on August 14, 1944. The Force disbanded in December 1944. From there Ronald joined the Canadian Paratroopers for the remainder of the war. For his service Ronald was awarded several medals, the 1939-1945 Star, the Defence Medal, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. After the war he returned to Canada and was discharged on January 8, 1946. He eventually married and had four children. He was a twenty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 52 in Peterborough. Ronald passed away on May 9, 1993 at the age of 69.
