465 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND STRUPAT, Donald J. Donald was born in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia on April 20, 1925. He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and served on HMCS Prevost in Canada and in the United States during World War II. He was discharged in 1945 having served on Minesweeper-Llewellyn and Corvettes. STUBBS, Walter Donald Walter was born in Combermere, Ontario on June 7, 1926. He first joined the C.A.C. in Ottawa on February 17, 1943 at the age of fourteen. He was discharged as under age and re-joined on June 1, 1944 serving with the C.A.C. and #30 Coy V.G. of C. CA. Walter served in Canada at various locations in Ontario andWainwright, Alberta as a Detention Room Guard. Prior to his service, he was an assistant at the local B.A. Service Station. On discharge, he joined the O.P.P. and later served with the North York Police and Metropolitan Police before retiring after 32 years of service. Walter passed away in Toronto on October 18, 1986. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Todmorden Branch 10. STUART, Douglas Holden Douglas was born in Scotland on June 23, 1915. He enlisted in the Army in October 1944 during World War II. He was attached to the Scottish Regiment and served in Kleve, Germany and Holland. Douglas was wounded while serving in WWII in Kleve, Germany. While climbing out of a fox hole a 40mm bomb went off and injured him. He has told his family that at the time he was crawling out to go and see another soldier who was leaning up against a tree. This move saved his life as the two other men in the fox hole perished in this attack. Doug’s family report that he was put on a stretcher while on the battlefield and was subsequently hit again injuring his shoulder and foot. He was hospitalized in England for ten months, and then at the Old Victoria Hospital in London, ON. Douglas was discharged on May 17, 1945. He made Chatham, ON his home where he built his own house from the ground up and raised his family. Doug worked for Ontario Steel (now known as Meritor). He has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 28 for over sixty years.
