457 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND STACEY, William Frank Frank was born in London, Ontario on March 4, 1939. He joined the RCAF on June 7, 1957. After his Basic Training, he was sent to CFB Cold Lake, Alberta. In October 1962, he married Lynne Mellemstrand and was transferred to Zweibrücken, Germany for the next four years. In 1966, he was transferred to Gimli, Manitoba. When Gimli closed in 1971, he changed trades and went to Penhold, Alberta in the Refrigeration Trade. In 1975, he went to CFB Holberg, BC. From there, in 1977, he was transferred to NDMC in Ottawa, then to NDHQ and then to Richardson in Perth. While in Ottawa he also served in Egypt for six months. Frank retired in 1983 and joined the Orleans Branch 632 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 33 years. STEPHENSON, Donald Edward “Don” Don was born in 1924 and raised in the Arkona area. He enlisted in the Army and served in Italy, France and Germany duringWorldWar II. He returned home to marry Barbara Herrington and they had one daughter, Janet. Don farmed until his retirement and enjoyed travelling. He passed away on November 13, 2018. STEKY, Oscar S. Oscar Stekovich was born in Serbia in 1900 where he received training as a podiatrist. Immigrating to Canada Oscar changed his surname to Steky and opened a shoemaker shop in Erin, Ontario. In 1940, Oscar enlisted in the Lorne Scots of the non-permanent Active Militia. In late 1940, Oscar was stationed to Branford, ON until June 1941 when he went overseas with the Lorne Scots. In November he was with the No. 2 Coy, No. 1 Canadian General Holding Unit. Sergeant Oscar Steky, due to his occupational experience, operated a boot making and repair shop during the war in England. He adopted a stray dog, named him Sport, who became the unit mascot and carried messages about the camp. Oscar returned from overseas in July 1945 and operated a shoe manufacturing business in Erin. He remained with the Lorne Scots Reserves as a Staff/Sgt. and recruited a number of young men into the regiment. In 1947, Oscar became the first president of the newly formed Erin Branch 442 of The Royal Canadian Legion. An unofficial military funeral was held for Sport the dog and his military type stone stands in front of the Legion hall. Oscar passed away on August 26, 1963 and is buried in the military section of Erin Union Cemetery.
