451 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SOLES, Donald Enright Donald was born in Verdun, Quebec on February 10, 1915 to William and Lillian (Sweitzer). He had one sister. Before enlisting, he worked at Forsythe as a shirt cutter from 1933 to 1940. His hobbies included raising homing pigeons, hunting and fishing. He was married to Helen (Dietrich) of Waterloo. Donald was previously with the Scots Fusiliers from February to June 1940, but then joined the Royal Canadian Air Force 57 Squadron and trained as a gunner to fight in World War II. Sergeant Soles was a member of the crew on the Wellington Bomber Mark II (W-5434) which crashed near Stapleford, returning from a raid on Frankfurt in the early hours of September 3, 1941. Sadly, all on board were killed. Sergeant Soles is buried in Row A, Grave 15 at Whittlesford Churchyard Cemetery in Cambridgeshire, England. A tapestry plaque bearing the squadron badge and names of the crew is displayed in Stapleford Church. He is gratefully remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo” and his picture hangs on the Memorial Wall in the City Hall in Waterloo, Ontario. SPENCELEY, Harold Harold was born in Scarborough, Ontario on August 8, 1895. He enlisted in the Army on March 22, 1916 and served with the 109th Battalion CEF in Canada, England and France during World War I. After his discharge, he attended Queen’s University School of Medicine, and opened a practice in Tobermory in 1933. He was awarded the Military Medal for Bravery, British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He was a Life Member of Tobermory Branch 290 of The Royal Canadian Legion. Harold passed away on December 6, 1937. SPEARS, Thomas Thomas was born on June 27, 1884 in Tobermory, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on April 25, 1916. He served during World War I with the 224th Forestry Battalion in France and Belgium. He was wounded while in France and was discharged on April 8, 1919. Thomas passed away on December 24, 1973.
