447 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SMITH, Michael James Allen Michael, son of Roy Buchanan, was born in Galt, Ontario. He enlisted in the Canadian Army Regular Force in May 1985 in the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. After basic training in CFB Cornwallis he completed his Artillery training at CFB Shilo. He was transferred to Air Defence Artillery and served in CFB Chatham, CFS Alert, CFB Suffield and CFB London (Wolseley Barracks). He was honourably discharged in June 1993 with the rank of Bombardier (Corporal). Michael was awarded the Special Service Medal with Alert Bar. SMITH, Roy Alexander Roy was born in Hillsburgh, Ontario on February 3, 1916. He attended the public and continuation school in Erin. In 1941 he enlisted with the Lorne Scots, nonpermanent army and trained with C Company at Georgetown. During the summer he spent two weeks with the Lorne Scots at Camp Niagara. In September he joined the active service of the Lorne Scots. In quick succession he was stationed in Hamilton, Ontario, Camp Borden, New Brunswick and by April 1942 was in England. In late August 1943 Roy was writing from North Africa, itching to get to Sicily to be with his brother Wib and buddies, who were now about to land on the Italian Peninsula. The desert heat, snakes, scorpions, mosquitos and malaria were the main hazards that added to what was otherwise a boring exercise. Roy finally got his wish, and joined the campaign through Italy and the subsequent transfer with the Canadian Army to North-West Europe. Roy served in Belgium and Holland to the war’s end and was discharged in August 1945. Roy was a charter member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 442, Erin and subsequently a member of Branch 20 in Georgetown. Roy Alexander Smith died on October 16, 1981 and rests in the Coningsby Cemetery in Erin, Ontario. SMITH, Murdock Murdock was born on September 14, 1888 in the Township of Lindsay, County of Bruce, Ontario. On March 18, 1916 while living in Stokes Bay, Ontario, Murdock enlisted in the 160th Bruce Battalion, CEF and served in England and France during WorldWar I as Lance Corporal. On his discharge on May 17, 1919 he returned home. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Lion’s Head Branch 202. Murdock passed away on July 10, 1956 and is buried in the Stokes Bay Cemetery.
