445 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SMITH, James Pearman James was born in Dundee, Scotland on June 13, 1899. He enlisted in the Army on November 4, 1916 with the Canadian 216th Overseas Expeditonary Force and was wounded during World War I in France. James re-enlisted during World War II in 1939 and served with the Medical Corps at No.1 Neurological Hospital in Basingstoke, England. After World War II he served in the Reserve Army with the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa. For his service, James was awarded the George V Service Medal 1914-1918, the Great War for Civilization 1914-1918, the George VI Canadian Defence Medal 1939-1945, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal 19391945, the George VI War Medal 1939-1945 and the Queen’s Jubilee Medal. He was a 25-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Montgomery, Ottawa and Eastview Branches. James passed away on October 9, 1971. SMITH, Leslie Leslie was born on January 10, 1923 in Thurnscoe, Yorkshire England then immigrated to Canada at the age of five with his parents and his brothers, Lawrence and Cyril via SS Montclare on April 22, 1928. In 1939, Leslie and his brothers volunteered for military service. They trained at Wolseley Barracks in London then spent the war years, 1939 to 1945, overseas with II Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers. Leslie was a sapper. They advanced through England, France, Belgium, Holland and Heidelberg, Germany when the war was ended. Leslie married his wife, Joan in Sheffield, England while serving overseas in 1942. Leslie never spoke much about the war. He was discharged in 1945 and received several medals during his service overseas. He returned to Canada to farm. He later had a bartending job, then became a Firefighter with DND at Camp Ipperwash and was transferred to CFB Shilo, Manitoba in 1971, where he passed away on December 15, 1983, just before serving his shift at the fire hall in Shilo. Leslie was an active member of Thedford Royal Canadian Legion Branch 3 in Brandon, Manitoba. Leslie left his wife and four children. SMITH, John “Stewart” Stewart was born in Strathroy, Ontario on July 16, 1924. He enlisted in the Canadian Army (Active) to serve in World War II on September 2, 1943 at #1 District Depot in London, Ontario. Stewart was trained as a pay writer/clerk and served with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RCEME) and the Royal Canadian Army Pay Corps (RCAPC) in Canada. His medals include the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-1945. Due to demobilization, Stewart was honourably discharged on April 2, 1946 at the rank of Sergeant. Stewart had two brothers who also served in World War II. Ross served with the Navy (RCNVR) and Norman was in the Army (RCASC). After the war, Stewart moved to the Bahamas with his family but eventually returned to Ontario working at the University of Toronto in the Finance Department.
