443 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SMITH, Gerald E. Gerald was born in Guelph, Ontario on June 20, 1895. Prior to World War l, Gerald was working as a steam fitter. He joined the military on June 20, 1915 and received his training in London, Ontario with the training depot. Assigned to the 29th Battalion, he left Guelph on July 23, 1915 and arrived in Bramshott and then on to Whitley, England in April 1916. He landed in France on July 15 and moved to the front lines. Hospitalized on October 21 with influenza, he was granted a leave on September 11 1917, then returned to France and joined the Artillery Pool E Battery. He was granted a fourteen day pass on October 26, 1918, returned to his unit and on April 18, 1919 posted to Witley. The demobilization of the CEF was in force and Gerald was sent to Canada, arriving in Ottawa on May 11 and then received his discharge May 26, 1919. In 1952, Gerald E. Smith was part of 100 Veterans who started Waterloo Branch 530 of The Royal Canadian Legion and is listed as a Charter Member. SMITH, James Flemington James was born in Scotland on May 4, 1914. He enlisted in the Army on July 12, 1940 with the Royal Canadian Engineers. He served in Europe during World War II and was discharged on October 19, 1945. James passed away on February 5, 1987. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Acton Branch 197. SMITH, Glen Arthur Glen was born on February 4, 1943 in Hamilton, Ontario. He started his military service with the RCR (Royal Canadian Regiment) in London, Ontario. After his discharge he joined the USMC (United States Marine Corp). Sergeant Glen Arthur Smith did two tours and was stationed at the Marble Mountain Marine Base, Vietnam. He served from May 13, 1968 to November 30, 1970 with: firstly, the 1st Marine Division, 2nd Battalion 176th Amtrac/Recon and secondly, the 1st Marine Division RVN, 3rd Amtrac Battalion. He was awarded the Rifle Sharpshooter medal. Glen finished his course as a certified electrician at Port Hueneme Marine Base in California in 1973, and was honourably discharged on September 30, 1974. Glen lived in Depew, New York, where he was self-employed as an electrical engineer. Glen also assisted many servicemen in getting their disability benefits, as well as being extremely active with Any Soldier, which sends packages to the troops overseas. He later moved to Linesville, Pennsylvania where, he was a member of the Linesville American Legion Post 462, the Linesville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7842, the Vietnam Veterans of America and the Disabled American Veterans. Glen passed away on May 5, 2017, age 74 in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
