441 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SMALLEY, Roy Clifford Roy was born in Toronto, Ontario on August 3, 1920. He enlisted on January 7, 1942 in the Royal Canadian Air Force in Toronto. He served as Leading Aircraftsman in Canada at air bases at Trenton, ON; Assiniboia and Davidson, SK; Winnipeg and Gimli, MB, training men for overseas service in combat duringWorldWar II. He was discharged on March 8, 1946 at Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-1945. He was past President of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 426, Newmarket and President of the Newmarket Veterans Association in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986 and 1987. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal by the Legion. A plaque was erected in his honour by his wife Netta, daughter Laurel and son David in 1986. Roy passed away on November 15, 1999. SMITH, David Lorne David was born in Ottawa, Ontario on October 3, 1940. He served with the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa - Reserve/Cadets from 1954 to 1958. He enlisted in the Army in September 1958 and served with ROTP – Canadian Guards. He served in Germany and Cyprus for six months as Lieutenant. He was discharged in October 1965. David is a fourteen-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion AC McCallum Branch 479 in Niagara Falls. SMITH, Clarence Clarence was born in Rockton, Ontario on October 28, 1895. He enlisted in the 129th Battalion, Wentworth Regiment on December 15, 1915 at Sheffield, ON. The 129th Battalion never fought as a unit, members were used to reinforce units already in France. (Perpetuated by the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry). He served in France and Belgium with the 8th Canadian Engineer Battalion and fought at Vimy. Clarence was demobilized on March 30, 1919. His duplicate pay book indicates that he was in hospital in London, England during the spring and early summer months of 1918 but no reason was given. His pay book indicates that he was back with the 8th Canadian Engineer Battalion at the time of the Armistice. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 121 in Cambridge. Clarence passed away on April 20, 1970.
